Female Circumcision is rife in Bahrain!

6 Jul, '05

I thought this thing only happens in Egypt, the Sudan and other African countries. I never for once thought that this happens, and happens a lot in Bahrain according to the Bahrain Human Rights Society’s 2004 Annual Report (arabic pdf). We’re not unique in this as it seems it’s quite rife in Oman and the Emirates as well.

And the main reason cited for this practice? To “protect” women!

This is absolutely barbaric and should be stamped out and eradicated.

The government should put through laws against this practice with real prison sentences against people who offer the crude surgery (this is almost always practiced by an old crone with no medical experience, hence the chance of complications from this operation are very real, other than robbing the girl from God-given sexual feelings) and for the mothers who do take their young girls to have them circumcised.

Much more important than the above is that ALL religious imams, judges and turbanned lot MUST preach against this in very unambiguous terms. A report in today’s Al-Wasat newspaper (arabic) clearly identifies that female circumcision is believed by its performers as a religious rite that women must be subjected to. They believe that a girl is unclean without it, and as such, cannot go to pilgrimage.

This is despicable and shameful.

i agree. it’s an atrocity. i went to wikipedia to find out exactly what they do during the “procedure.” i couldn’t believe it. see for yourself – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_circumcision “infibulation” is particularly fucked up.

Truly revolting. Worse, the people doing this are usually the girl’s female relatives.

There is a famous African model who lives in the UK. She had this done to her as a child and has now devoted herself to its eradication.

this is hardly a joke or a joking matter. this is a serious situation that requires YOUR action as well as everyone in Bahrain to stop this atrocity.

I thought this was only a practice in Africa and in some pockets of Saudi Arabia, too. I had no idea it was done in Bahrain. Thanks for posting this, Mahmood. Laws are good, but education on everything that is wrong with this practice should be added and you’re right that scholars should strongly condemn this. What good are laws if attitudes don’t change?

they also do it (or used to) in parts of south america. i was aware that it happens there and africa, but didn’t know until now that it also happens in, and near Bahrain.

unfortunately, there will always be someone around to break the law.

From an Islamic standpoint I would think this would be haraam. Circumcision for a man serves a practical purpose. Penil cancer rates are lower, men are cleaner. It has even been shown that women with husbands that are circumcised are at a lower risk for cervical cancer.

Cutting of females serves nothing than to support the insecurity of their men. The problem is that the women support this in many cases. They did a poll in Egpyt, where the practice is pretty common, and over 90% of women who had been circumcised supported it for their daughters.

Mahmood is right, the religious leaders often worry about relatively unimportant issues whilst issues such as this go unaddressed. Haraam Alaykum.

    Anon,

There is no link between male circumcision and lower rates of penile cancer. The vast majority of cervical cancers are caused by venereal diseases, not by uncircumcised men.

If circumcision had such great practical value for males, God would have caused them to be born that way.

It would seem the American Academy of Pediatrics in their “Circumcision policy statement” of 1999 do not agree with you.

“Circumcision and cancer of the penis

Circumcision during infancy reduces the risk of penile cancer. Penile cancer is 3.2 times more common in uncircumcised men than in those who were circumcised at birth. Circumcision later in life does not substantially reduce the risk of getting penile cancer. 1 ”

    http://health.yahoo.com/ency/healthwise/aa31702

It would also seem there is a link between cervical cancer and circumcision. This link also extends to the rates of circumcision and rates of STDs. Interesting to note that this study found that circumcised men had higher educations than those who were not.

“Overall prevalence of circumcision was 19.3%; circumcised men had higher levels of education and reported less frequent genital washing compared with uncircumcised men (40.5% vs 23.0%). In all groups, circumcised men had lower prevalence of HPV (5.5% vs 19.6%). With circumcision, the odds ratio (OR) for penile HPV was 0.37 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.16 to 0.85) after adjusting for age, level of education, age at first intercourse, lifetime number of sexual partners, and frequency of genital washing after sex. This result persisted whether or not female partners had cervical HPV or cancer. Apart from being uncircumcised, the only other significant risk factor for penile HPV was the number of men’s sexual partners. ”

Both of these things, the link between penile cancer and cervix cancer were indeed comfirmed to me a few days ago by a urologist friend of the family.

here here, along with other things that many men (muslim men and other men) do to their wives, sisters daughters etc… to keep them down.

All this shows is a connection between STDs and circumcision. STDs are linked to cancer, not to circumcision, but circumcision reduces rates of STDs.

This study does not consider people who only had sex with their spouses.

This study shows results in the US, not in the rest of the world. To be more accurate, it would have to study cultures which do not practice circumcision, like those of China or India.

why were we born with genitals to have them hacked or sliced off???Totally uncivillised and barbaric.

  17. anonymous says:

male circumcision is just as barbaric in theory

why are Muslim men such wimps when it comes to speaking out against this….arent they worried about their human rights too??

    where is the outrage??

  18. Ibn says:

Female Circumcision is rife in Bahrain!

    Malik,

    You have missed the point.

The point of this, is not weather some action is more beneficial or not to your health. There are one thousand and one things one could do to oneself to lower the risk of STDs, cancer, tumors, blah blah blah. The point is, that the GOVERNMENT SHOULDNT DO IT FOR YOU! And from the parental perspective, the objective of the parent is to TEACH their offspring how BEST to make CHOICES for themselves…not cut off Ahmed’s fingers so he can’t jerk off by the time he’s 13.

If we follow the logic of a nanny-state, where the all mighty religious state bans and allows actions (and body parts) of people based on what is more “beneficial” to oneself, then your “ideal” state should do the following:

    1) Ban sex: ZERO possibility of STDs!
    2) Ban Smoking, long hours on the beach: No more skin and/or lung cancer!
    3) Ban cars: No more humans killed by those machines!

    and of course, my favourite:

    4) Ban the limbic system: “Evil” sexual thoughts generated by the brain are removed!

Ahh, what a perfect world. Our people have no STDs, families do not lose their members to car accidents, cancer research funding is down to zero since we have none, and our men never try to hit on women…in fact there is no porn to be found here!
Of course, our males are missing a testicle and some part of their brains, our females are castrated, we go to work on horses, and no one’s ever seen a lobster.

There’s one thing for sure though: The state has banned personal responsibility.

Wow. Who says time travel is impossible? Want to go back in time to do a documentary on the dark ages? Simple! Book a flight to saudi Arabia!

In the spirit of Christmas I shall refrain from using too foul a language.

Now, how can some tiny-brained individual from California judge a whole swathe of Muslims because s/he cannot see the outrage? Oh God that cannot be, let’s mount a demonstration of gargantuan proportions just for your honour shall we? Would that be enough for you? Of course not.

Get a life. Just because YOU don’t see us outraged at this heinous crime doesn’t mean that we are not fully against such custom and that we are not outraged by it.

Now go crawl under a rock and do humanity a favour.

    settle down Mahmood…
no need to get angry as I’m simply trying to start a discussion on Male Circ…

the fact of the matter is Male Circ. is RIFE in the Muslim world and there is very little if any debate on the subject (as opposed to discussion on women’s issues where there has been significant progress ….take Egypt or Qatar as an example)

I lived in Saudi for awhile so please don’t assume anything about me (that I hate muslims or arabs for that matter)

“tiny brained Individual from California” …..talk about pre-judging!!!

anyways….keep it up…better to argue than avoid

  21. anonymous says:

Re: Female Circumcision is rife in Bahrain!

Male circumcision is every bit as ugly and barbaric as what is done to females. Don’t get uptight, I live in a very conservative area (Texas) and have been married to a Muslim for 25 years. Yet we have 3 sons who are healthy and intact as God formed them. The foreskin is not a birth defect and does not cause cancers, diseases, etc. If this were true the human race would have died out long ago. Muslims cling to this mutilation due to custom, not religion, and the practice is not advocated in the Qur’an anywhere. They are constantly looking to supported it any way they can by carefully and desperately hunting for any medical acknowledgement of its benefit, however questionable. Circumcision is nothing but a cure in search of a disease!
However questioning male circumcision is forbidden and any attempt at dialog is refuted with a brutish “God demands it!”

  22. mahmood says:

Re(1): Female Circumcision is rife in Bahrain!

Let me attempt to be clearer in my views at what incensed me in the first place, and it has nothing to do with dangly bits or whether they are hooded. My “problem” if you want to describe it as that is the complete tone of the comment, please go re-read it and then tell me if the person writing that comment actually was seeking discovery and understanding, or was acting as a simple forum troll. I am of the opinion of the latter.

As for the subject of male circumcision, I am of the opinion that mutilating any part of the human body is wrong, be that drilling holes in noses, ears, eye-brows, belly buttons or other areas to fit various kinds of jewelry, or chopping off bits of genitalia for the supposed reason that it is “cleaner” morally, religiously or even aesthetically. People lived for hundreds of thousands of years without the need to do so and simple personal hygiene would scupper the arguments normally used for mutilation.

I think you may have jumped the gun a little bit on this Mahmood. Male circumcision has been a topic getting some play recently in the US and for many it is a HOT emotional topic.

Now the problem I have with the posters comment is the Muslim male portion about them being “wimps”. I am not psychic but I have to wonder why that was put in there in the first place but I tend to side and want to believe that the post was poorly worded with maybe a little trolling. Later the poster does say he/she was trying to start a discussion on the subject. Personally I don’t see what the big deal is. I was snipped as a wee little lad and I function just fine!

Well since we have long suffered from such a culturely inherited barberic practice, the best thing you can do is to talk about it and to bring to the surface and attention of the concerned. trust me it would work……

dont the jews also circumcize their boys?

  26. Khalid says:

Is there any Muslim who can come with a single Quran phrase or real Hadith that support female circumcision.

  27. Barry says:

Personally, I think the men who practice this and say it is necessary should all have the glans of their penises removed in the same manner.

My parents have a book about the various coming of age rites around the world (literally), and one scene shows a woman in Egypt getting her clitoris removed (they don’t show her genitals) and she is crying and screaming in pain.
