BahrainBlogs.org fixed

24 Aug, '06

I hope!

The problem was I think one file was overwritten when I upgraded from the older 1.5 version of WP to 2.x. I have wiped out the database, manually entered every single link, then pulled your defined contents (if you define your feed availability to only 10, then those were pulled, check your Options/Reading page in WP).

I have also updated the automated script to pull content every 30 15 minutes, instead of just every hour.

Do let me know if I have skipped your feed and I’ll fix it.

So far, the problems are with Rayyash, Qassoum and SilverGirl as the system cannot find feeds on their blogs, so please check guys and let me know when all is fixed and I’ll add it. In your response, please give me the full feed URL if you don’t mind.

I know the problems you deal with Safat is on the same system I have it running a cron every 20 minutes (0,20,40) since FeedWordpress has some strange way of updating blogs in its cycle. I’ve been even contemplating it making it every 15.

One thing I been using is link2opml, which takes all the blog links and them creates a shiny happy OPML file. I backup up every now and then so if anything happens I just reimport that into WordPress.

I’ve also hacked the wp-rss2.php so that it will show the name of the blog then the post title. (ex Mahmoods Den : Bahrainblogs.org fixed). Its a simple thing and makes it easier to know where the post came from when looking at it on a feed reader.

There is also the theme hack on the main page to show either snippets or full version of the post. Some people like to glance at it during the day and dont want to be hassled with long or media heavy posts.

If you want to know how I did any of these just drop me an email, they are pretty simple.

YES I want them! Anything to help with this would be appreciated. I have opted to just dump all the links into FeedBurner and get it to do all the validation and addition to the snippets, and only use those links rather than a direct blog feed as that can contain illegal characters that would halt the import of other blogs as I have found out.

The link2opml is sweet, thanks for the link, I certainly need to use it.

I would appreciate having a look and possibly using your mods if you don’t mind. I’ll email you just now to request them.

  3. Ouch! I’m sorry you had to enter every single link manually!
Really ya36eek el 3afya on watching over bahrainblogs.

As for my site feed, it’s: http://silveroo.blogspot.com/atom.xml.
It should work since it’s working with bloglines.

    Can I mention one thing?
Would it be possible to move the categories section so that it comes after the Contributors list? It would make the list of bloggers easier to be reached instead of having to scroll so far down.

Thanks again 🙂 And Mabrook for Amna.

Excellent ideas Silver Girl, I’ll implement the change this afternoon.

    And thanks.

    done!

I’ve actually removed the categories because with over 250 categories they’re becoming a liabiilty rather than help to the people wishing to have a look at the site.

I’ve re-arranged the sidebar as well, let me know if you any ideas about the site.

One question I would like to know from the blog authers listed is do you like the summary as you we do them now or would you prefer full posts in bahrainblogs.org? What about bahrainblogs users, what would you like?

  6. TechZ says:

wow, sorry you had to add them all manually. Thanks for all the time and effort you have put into the site 🙂

  7. I personally like the summary style. If only we can get it to show more than the first 2 lines of each post. Up to 5 lines maybe?

Also, if I am to suggest one more thing, bahrainblogs.org is missing the “Bahraini” feel/touch. May I suggest adding an image of the flag or anything else representative of Bahrain somewhere at the top?

I happen to be working on a “website usability evaluation” project for one of my courses at the moment.. which explains my picky-ness!

    Thanks Mahmood 🙂

Isn’t the BoycottBatelco emblem enough for the Bahraini-ness? I would have thought the fact that they are untouchable by the government of Bahrain, they truly represent our official flag!

    ;0

I summarise the first 200 characters, I can certainly increase that to 500… but that would mean I have to go into every link at feedburner and do that manually there first.

I’ll see what I can do, probably in phases as I still have to earn a living unfortunately!

LOL! WALLAH I saw that reply coming!

    Cheers 🙂

    😆

I’m actually thinking of changing the theme into a more modern one. The 2.x themes have widgets for the sidebar which makes making changes and rearranging much easier (drag and drop), and this theme we’re using is way past its sell-by date, although I do still like it as it is weightless on the server’s resources.

Once the theme is changed, I’ll definitely put up a flag or a national symbol up.

  11. Can I add my “Blend of Civilizations” Blog ?? I tried but there was a blank page!!
    monline.wordpress.com

  12. mahmood says:

Ah, you found a problem then and thanks for letting me know that I haven’t fixed the contact page! I shall do that now. And I’ll add your blog.

  13. Thank you bro…
I’ve added you to my blogroll..
I like your ideas, though I don’t agree with some…
Looking forward to see ya soon;)

    More than welcome Mohamed!
