Arif seems to like the soft bread and not the crispy. I personally like both. maybe soft more.

    Oh, Mahmood!

You’re making me SICK, I tell you! Sick!

We used to get those all the time. Sometimes we got the kebabs to go with, but most of the time it was Samboosas and paratta. Here in the DC area, I FINALLY managed to find some authentic Samboosa and Malaysian Paratta at a Pakistani Halal butchers, and a couple of Persian restaurants have decent Khubbiz, but somehow it’s not the same…

…definitely not the same price, the whole family had their fill of Khubbiz, Kabab, Samboosa and Paratta for a dinar and change (I can’t imagine it being much more than that now), but out here I can’t do it for less than $25!!!

BTW, it’s not a proper Samboosa unless it drips so much grease that you can see right through the brown paper bag! My dearie wasn’t too keen on deep frying them, so she baked them. The next time around we tried pan-frying them, but it wasn’t much of an improvement. Someday we’ll get it right….

[Obligatory shawarma hunt update – While Falafel sandwiches have gained popularity around the DC area, and it’s pretty damn hard to flub up Falafel; an acceptable shawarma is still a non-factor in this part of the country…]

Yes, I thought this vlog would hit home hardest with expatriate Bahrainis!!

The whole shebang (from the samboosa shop and khobiz) was BD 1.700 ($4.50 to you Yanks) so it was good value for money.

They tell me however that to unclog arteries it costs considerably more! 😮

oh and a lot of it stays in the fridge to snack on for 2 or 3 days too… but the trick then is to warm them up in the grill in the oven, rather than nuking them in the microwave as then they will just come out disgustingly soggy (and continue to drip oil) while if grilled, they come out crispy and nice.. even nicer than the original as they will be lighter having already dripped most of their oil.

tip of the day.. now I’m off to spend some time with the family..

Watching the video, I couldn’t resist the fried samboosas. I hope they were cheese? Just joking. Now where can I go and find myself some of those good cheese sambosas here in London? I wish I knew.

By the way, I’m back to wirting in my blog. You may not remember me, but I’ve been a dedicated reader (more like a fan!) of yours since 2003 (or 2004?)!

Anyways, amazing video! Take care and have a lovely day!

Lulwa thanks for your kind words. If your blog is not listed in bahrainblogs.org, I shall do so now.

Have fun hunting for cheese samboosas in London!

Ah, that’s an internal Al-Yousif thing! It’s a special spice mixture that mum makes (and whose secret it is) and uses for making Machboos and with slight differences the curries etc. She supplies each of her children’s houses a large coffee tin volume of the precious stuff, then if we really have behaved ourselves she would give us another when the first is finished…

Without the machboos powder, everything tastes bland!

Next time you’re over I’ll invite you over to sample some of her cooking.

Thank you Mahmood, I can’t afford a digital camera, hockey is an expensive hobby. If I can borrow one, or ask someone to take a vid, I will post it via YouTube, or something.

Mahmood, you love your Formula One. I ADORE ice hockey. Any teams in Bahrain? Turkey has started some teams. The rinks are small tho.

Yes, I think we have one at the ice rink (we only have one in Bahrain) but I have no information about it unfortunately. Should be fun making a video about that too!
