I like the independence day speech, its written in very good arabic . It remind me of arabic classes at school where we talked about the arab united states but for sure we divided more and more . If you visit some arabain counteries you wont even feel you are in arabic state you will think you enter the indian border without knowing . we have very good writing and speaking skills in arabic but we dont realy have the want for unity . How did it feel to be “protected” by the Brits?

I think Wikipedia has a good page on this as far as historical perspective is concerned. As to the “real” feel, I’m afraid I’m not the authority there. I was 9 years old when we gained our independence, so there aren’t many distinct memories but I hope that others who have lived through that era can contribute to this topic, or even write a book for us interested enough to read about that period and educate ourselves in our recent history.

There seems to be a parliamentary motion which could be tabled to ensure that it is celebrated henceforth. Whether that celebration also ensures yet another day off remains to be seen.
