ISIS and Islam are inseparable

ISIS and Islam are inseparable

Islamic terror is gripping the world with Muslims now being confronted – rightly – to do something about their own grown extremism. The world would no longer tolerate placebos and political correctness and simple condemnation. They want action. The world has also lost patience with Islamist apologists who maintain their myopic position that ISIS and Islam are separate and with that they absolve themselves from any other necessary action. “We have nothing to do with them. They’re not Muslim.” But they are! Everything they do is based on the Quran, Hadith or Islamic Tradition. In a literal rather than a figurative sense too.

Islam must take responsibility for the various violent and terrorist groups it spawned in its name throughout history.

My contention – just like the Dalai Lama – is that prayer is no longer enough. Muslims need to reform Islam and its core to expunge it from violence and prejudice. I know that this stance will not be popular but it is a discussion that is long past due, and I invite you to contribute to this topic in the hope that it will create a nucleus of change for the better of humanity, and ironically, the very survival of Islam in a modern and fast moving world.

Here’s the start of the discussion on my Facebook wall:

Well, ISIS has everything to do with Islam. Only when you reform Islam will violent groups effects will be mitigated. Until then, people who continue to be in denial and go on about how “IS has nothing to do with the religion of peace” are actually doing more of a disservice than even IS. So face reality and demand reform, separate religion from state and then you will have some semblance of normalcy in your lives. Until then, ISIS and groups like it will continue to be Islam.

The Quran: The issue of the content and the container?

The Quran: The issue of the content and the container?

Once again, a riot breaks out by Muslims outraged at the tearing and disrespecting the Holy Quran. Not for the first time, and I daresay not the last either. I’m used to these outrageous riots in both Pakistan and Afghanistan especially, for some unknown reason. These riots don’t tend to happen in the Gulf or most of the other Arab countries. The most intense riots and demonstrations – other than those in Pakistan or Afghanistan – appear to occur in Muslim communities in western countries. Paradoxically, countries Muslims chose to escape to from the persecution and maltreatment they received at the hands of Muslim leaders and co-religionists and to partake of the economic and living opportunities those countries provide.

torn quran
At least 17 people were injured at an overcrowded German refugee shelter after one resident tore pages out of a Koran. Around 20 refugees chased the Afghan man who damaged the Muslim Holy Book and threw the discarded pages into the toilet. He was eventually saved by the shelter’s guards which prompted the mob – according to local media mainly Syrian men – to turn their anger on the camp’s security team. [ DailyMail ]

So, I wasn’t particularly shocked when I heard of riots having taken place earlier this week in a German refugee camp when a Syrian refugee found a torn copy of the Quran in a toilet. What did surprise me; however, was that the suspected perpetrator was an Afghan!

To complete this sad saga, the Syrians of course took it upon themselves “to protect the honour of Islam and its Holy Book” by instigating a riot when it appeared that the police were protecting the suspect, as the police should, but that’s another story. Human rights are completely foreign to the Arab populace, so it will take some time for the refugees to appreciate why the German police had to protect the suspected culprit. In time, I hope, they will realise why. But that’s again another story. The story here is why we automatically resort to violence to prove a point. It’s almost a required part of negotiation and a facet of our self-expression.

Given that the Quran of course is a Holy and revered book and should be respected, as should the Bible and the Torah, why should vandalising any of these Holy texts create such a violent response?

Why is a piece of paper, or a book for that matter, be held in so much reverence; while, what’s printed in it is completely ignored, misinterpreted and misrepresented, as evidenced by the very act of rioting and overheated emotions? Are the teachings of the Quran less valuable than the paper they’re printed on? It is quite apparent that the faithful put much more value on form than function.

One needs to ask, what does it matter if someone disrespects and vandalises the Quran in any way? Will it reduce or invalidate its teachings and the values it espouses in the eyes of the whole world, let alone Muslims? Would that respect or its messages for that matter change at all if someone tore the Quran up, perforated it with a shotgun, burnt it or destroyed it in any other way?

I remember my late grandmother, rest her soul in peace, who was illiterate – well, she could read the Quran and only the Quran, but couldn’t read a newspaper if you put a gun to her head. I know, weird. However, before any newspaper gets thrown out or otherwise repurposed, she used to go through them and cuts out any paragraph or passage that has verses of the Quran and saves those pieces of paper. Then and only then could the newspaper be re-used in whatever other purpose, or simply be thrown out. When asked why she did that, she would simply respond that we have to respect the words of Allah. Bless her. When I pressed her and pointed out that regardless of what is printed on that paper, its re-use will never change the value of Allah’s Holy words. She just brushed me off with a “yalla, don’t you talk rubbish at me now off you go and leave me alone” that admonition normally was appended with “ya aswad elwijh” which literally meant “oh you of a black face” which was the ultimate insult by her. Such a simple time! 😉

I believe that it all boils down to the fact the Muslims regard the Quran as the direct words of Allah. As such, it is held in very high reverence, and vandalising it, or improperly disposing of it is regarded as an affront to Allah Himself. I believe that this interpretation needs to be revised. Especially as the Quran is now available on various electronic media, probably sharing space with completely offensive content that arguably be much more of an issue than the act of vandalism and physical disrespect. It is time to shift the objective to valuing the Quran’s content, rather than just its physical form.

I believe that true value of the Quran is in its ideas, lessons, stories, and inspiration it brings forth. And no amount of vandalism, be that tearing, burning or abusing the pages of a book will ever detract from the essence of its contents.

My friends, regardless of what is done to the physical book, let’s not succumb to emotions, let’s instead value the Quran’s contents and live by them. Let us distinguish between the content and the container. The content of the Quran, after all, is much more important than the container.

A sure way to defeat ISIS

A sure way to defeat ISIS

Posted on

My own personal views on how to defeat ISIS or any other form of extremism:

  1. teaching-religionSeparate mosque from state. Put that in the constitution and don’t allow its reversal.
  2. Critical thinking should be the mandatory teaching methodology.
  3. Remove all instances of the “tripple-R” syndrome.
  4. Don’t teach religion in schools. If people want their children to be religiously educated, they should do it themselves. They shouldn’t be allowed to cop-out by delegating that important task to some other entity without their direct involvement and input. Getting  a cookie cutter version of a religion to be shoved down children’s throats is obviously not the answer. That method failed, quite evidently.
  5. If religion is to be taught in schools, then teach ALL religions, not just the state religion and don’t allow one to be emphasised as “the true religion” and all others are “bad” or “inauthentic” or whatever derogatory method is used to show how exemplary your religion is by denigrating the others. Encourage healthy debate, even at a young age. They’re just young, not imbeciles. One hardly teaches deep theological issues to six-year olds.
  6. Introduce real democracy as a method of rule. Yes, I mean one-man one-vote. If you want to call it “Western” then that’s fine be me. It works. Countries adopting it are way ahead of any of ours. Let people have a choice in who they elect to follow and they should be able to peacefully remove them if they fail their duties, or when their terms expire. No one person for life any more please. That didn’t work in the vast majority of cases throughout the ages. Let’s learn from history for once, rather than continue to blindly repeat it.

There you have it. Maybe by adopting these, the next generation will have a better time at integrating as human being with the rest of the world. And they can choose for dialogue as a method of resolving differences with the others rather than chopping people’s heads off.

Yalla. I’m fed up of waiting.

Overdue Reactions – Translated

Thanks to @BahBourgeois, we now have a translation of the original letter which created a lot of feedback and requests for translation. So here’s the translation:

To The Gathering of National Unity
Thank you. Thanks to you we are no longer at a loss and we now know the path of righteousness so we followed it.

I am Sunni Bahraini and I love Al-Khalifa and I won’t be exaggerating to describe myself as a fanatic Sunni to the extent of hating other Islamic sects which I believed are not even worthy of being called Islamic. In short, I along with many others regarded ourselves as the followers of the ‘Right Path’ who will survive Hellfire. Except for our belief and sect which we cherished and defended, we believed that all other sects and their followers are the firewood of Hell especially the Shias whom we called Rafida, Majoos, Safawis, Children of Muta’a and other offensive and obscene things. All that as a result of the hatred that dominated our conscience and our minds and made us inclined towards evil and lies and stories about differences between us that do not exist except in our minds and souls. We disagree with them (the Shias) because they do not lead their lives except in accordance to clear principles while we have been like those who the Prophet (pbuh) described as (blind) followers of all good and evil.

We have shrouded our view with excessive sanctity and regarded our religious scholars as our guardians, valued their preaching and became slaves to their teachings but that has led us to losing sight of our religion and our belief that God enjoins justice and kindness, wisdom and fair preaching and compassion. God said in the Quran “And had you been severe and harsh-hearted, they would have broken away from about you” This verse was the reason many unbelievers embraced Islam.

  • Are we the follower of the Quran and the Morals of Islam or are we the followers of those who call themselves Al Salaf Al Salih (The Righteous Ancestors) and their alien fatwas?
  • Who are these Righteous Ancestors whom we take from only that which divides us with other sects as if it was a divine book?
  • Why do we glorify many of the Prophet’s Companions and name our mosques after them (while we don’t even know their history) and yet we choose not to name our mosques after Ahlulbayt (Members of the Prophet’s Family) – may Allah be pleased with all of them? Who is more worthy of being remembered and immortalized- Ahlulbayt or the Companions of the Prophet (some of whom were described as hypocrites in the Holy Quran)?
  • Or are we like the ignorant people of Quraish who created idols, sanctified and worshipped them and killed all those who refused to do so?

This is a sample of questions which, whether we like it or not, demonstrate that we are following the wrong path. We simply withhold the banner of Islam and use it to justify all the injustice we commit against people who disagree with us. We interpret our religion according to our own whims and prejudices and based on what our Guardian’s dictate but they only surround themselves with people who claim knowledge and faith and piety while in reality they only seek to achieve their own personal interests at our expense.

The recent elections and what happened in it from insult and cursing (against the Shias) makes it clear to those who seek truth where all the hatred lies. The difference between Sunnis and Shias is only an excuse to justify all the crimes and wrongdoings.

In writing this, I am representing eight families (maybe even more) but as I am writing this I am representing these eight families. We all followed a certain path previously and have now decided to take a different one-free from all the hatred and hypocrisy which goes against our beliefs and the interest of our children, our families and our religion.

Yes, we are approximately thirty three individuals who lost their way as a result of those who called themselves “the men of national unity” and so-called religious scholars. But we now have discovered the right path and we need to restore all that which got destroyed from faith as a result of the crimes we have committed against many people and the Shias in particular whom we labeled Rafida (meaning Rejecters, a demeaning term). Yes they are perhaps Rejecters – Rejecters of Injustice and Evil.

The following three points have made us take our new position:

  • We carefully read and reviewed the demands of those who we opposed and realized that their demands are all fair and legitimate and all the stories about Iran and Hezbollah are fabrications. Where was Iran and Hezbollah before 1979 when both Shias and Sunnis chose Al-Khalifa to rule in 1971?
  • Islam is against the killing of innocent people, displacing the poor and cutting off their livelihood. Why couldn’t our hearts carry compassion and mercy for people who advocate reform?? Why did we fabricate all these stories and celebrated this as victory?
  • Is it Islamic for a Government to abuse human rights (and especially those of Shias) by importing mercenaries who do not care about the history of this land which our grandfathers, both Sunnis and Shias have built together?

The events in Bahrain have allowed us to witness the highest and most aggressive levels of hate in ourselves which was nurtured by our so-called religious scholars, our fake media, and the dishonest pens of our journalists which we previously respected but now the masks have fallen. We have seen how they all promoted repression and killing and the destruction of mosques and the burning of the Quran and other crimes against a group of people who demanded their rights in more than peaceful ways and we haven’t found anything as of today that implicates them in any of the stories we fabricated against them (e.g. carrying arms or weapons, etc.)

My God! How did we do that? How come we believed those who claim to be the men of nationality unity when they were promoting killing and repression and fabricating stories against the Shias trying to convince us that our real brothers and protectors are those ‘new Bahrainis’ (only because they share the same sect).

  • Who attacked our rights? Who committed all the crimes in Riffa, Muharraq and Askar? Who took our jobs in the defense force, the ministry of interior, ministry of education and other sectors which were previously monopolized by us? Are they the Shias or those new Bahrainis?
  • Are government housing projects and other public serves a priority for Shias or the new Bahrainis who have become first class citizens and us 2nd class citizens and Shias 10th class citizens?

Stop lying to us. You don’t deserve this country.

We find the claims of our religious scholars and leaders and on their head the leaders of the National Unity Gathering to carry lots of injustice, ignorance, repression and lies. Their words reminded us of the life of the Prophet (pbuh) and what the tribes of Quraish have committed against him. Keep your fake tears and your fabrications and false media away.

Despite all that and the injustice committed by many Sunnis; the speeches by Shia religious scholars continued to call for peace, love, respect and unity between Sunnis and Shias. May god protect Umm Hassan, perhaps her words were more sincere than all our leaders and religious scholars. Her words are honest and free from hypocrisy and did not call for division as did many others.

From the words of Sheikh Abdullatif Al-Mahmood, president of the National Unity gathering (you brought us shame):

  • The Government had to do what it has done otherwise the Shias would have ruled us and the Sunnis would have been subject to discrimination
  • The burning of the Koran is permissible; the companions of the Prophets have done it before.
  • The demolition of unlicensed mosques is permissible and praying in these mosques is not acceptable.

Here are some excerpts from the speech of Isa Qassim (leading Shia figure in Bahrain): Servants of Allah, we have to fear God and not deviate from the straight path in a moment of anger. Let the good word and action take precedence over all that would debase us in a moment of anger.

And the speech of Ali Salman, Head of Wifaq Society-which we used to call Nifaq (Hypocrisy) Society- included these words: Bahrain is the home of both Sunnis and Shias. No one has superiority over the other, but we are all equal in religion, citizenship and nationality and we shall both respect and love each other and build this country together. Every Sunni individual, family and home is the responsibility of Shias to protect and every Shia individual, family and home is the responsibility of Sunnis to protect. Our country is our responsibility to protect so let us avoid a sectarian war.

In short, Sheikh Abdullatif Al Mahmood gave the green light for killing and destruction and unfortunately we followed him like dogs follow their master. I apologize for not mentioning excerpts from the speeches of our honourable MPs Jassim Al Saidi and Mohammed Khalid and their likes (We ask God to guide us and them). I do not mean to underestimate their person but what they have said does not fall short from sounding like the awful rhetoric of Israel’s Foreign Minister Lieberman towards the Palestinians. In their case, their hatred and xenophobia is directed towards the Shias. We do not know the source of all this hatred but they are convinced on condemning the Shias and permitting Jihad against them! Myself and people like me were hateful against the Shias as well and we used to utter words harsher than what these MPs and others have said against the Shias. Unfortunately, that’s what we’ve learned in our mosques and from our religious scholars unlike what the Shias learn in their mosques and husseiniyas.

Since the beginning of the crisis, many events were fabricated by Sunnis with the support of security forces. Unfortunately, we believed and promoted these stories and cursed the innocent people all in the name of protecting this country from the fictitious scare they promoted. Some of the stories they framed and invented include the following:

  • The ‘Occupation’ of Pearl Roundabout (which they refuse to refer to as Pearl Roundabout despite being referred to as such in all our school books!)
  • The incident at the University of Bahrain. All the videos and pictures bear witness to the criminal acts we have committed against this Country
  • The incident of cutting the tongue of the muezzin. I was so angry about this incident that I wanted to seek revenge by doing the same against one of them (the Shias). But then the lies were exposed and the Ambassador of Bangladesh denied the story. This incident demonstrates the extent to which we have sold this country- even our muezzins are foreign, our imams are foreign, our military and security forces are foreign. Truly, we live in a cocktail that we’ve created with our own hands especially for the Foreigner to live and for us to die in. All praise and gratitude be to God that the truth has emerged before it is too late and before our conscious-less and honourless MPs sell this country for good. I am outraged at them because they have intentionally fabricated the facts and created all this hatred in our hearts. They have played with people’s emotions and we have given them that opportunity by voting for them.
  • The crimes of the (pro-government) thugs and I was one of them and there are many of us including the ‘new Bahrainis’ who joined us in these crimes (we were about to kill, kidnap, etc.). Despite all that, we have never seen a single Shia enter our villages to destroy or terrorize. Nor did we find any Shia attacking us or committing any wrongdoing to justify the mess we have created it. We started fearing everything and anything because we believed those who sold their country. If all this was to the benefit of the ‘new Bahrainis’ what was to our benefit or yours? Shame on you!
  • The incidents at schools, ministries and companies which was among the worst you have encouraged us to do. We became in a race to finding pictures of the ‘traitors’? Was going to pearl roundabout and carrying the flag of Bahrain such a crime? (in reference to the sacking of employees who participated in the protests and general strike)
  • I hear and witness events everyday but our media chose not to cover them and we chose to believe the lies of these TV stations, their reporters and their guests who sold their soul to the devil. Even the Takbeer was labeled as noise and therefore deserving of gunshots and teargas. Photos of the leadership are hung everywhere, on every light pole, tree trunk, toilet, kitchen and farm. It reminded us of Saddam and Gaddafi and the crimes they commit and their claims that the people loved them. We love and will continue to love Al-Khalifa and we will not accept anyone else but come on give us a break! Instead of planting the love of our leadership you have made us detest all these exaggerated images.
  • The arrest of women also shocked me and made me think: Would we accept if that happened to us? to our teachers, doctors, nurses, students and employees? Don’t we fear God for all the crimes we’ve committed in the name of protecting our Country and our Sect but all we succeeded to do is destroy this Country in a race for money and status!

We have realized that if we want to live a life of dignity and true faith, we should not stand with those who promoted or condoned all the corruption we have witnessed- the corruption of souls, minds and conscience. We have demeaned ourselves by claiming faith which has nothing to do with the Islamic teachings of our Prophet (pbuh).

He who seeks truth and justice must treat human beings as human beings and not based on belief, sect, nationality or any other affiliation as if saying “If you are with us, we thank you and if you are against us, we’ll kill you!!!”. We do not want to be partners in your crimes and your actions. We do not want your actions against this country to be attributed to us or to any honourable Sunni. We do not want to live a life of abundance over the bodies of innocent people and the dignity of our Shia brothers nor do we want the predominance of our Sect and our People at the expense of others. What has happened proves that we have sold our country. Our country no longer belongs to those who carved its glory but now belongs to a mixture of defeated Bahrainis and a growing number of people committing crimes and panting for money. God forbid what hides behind the hands of those who abuse the security of this country including Indians, Baloushis, Pakistanis, Syrians, Yemenis, Jordanians, Baathists and other naturalized citizens (with all due respect to the honourable people from those countries and those who deservingly were granted the Bahraini citizenship) . It is those kinds of people who made us forget what peace and security is and we probably will not see it anymore. Thanks, all the thanks to our religious leaders and scholars that we are now lost until God guides us to the straight path and restores all our wrongdoing (that which was committed and that which we are aware of and that which is hidden). We ask God for forgiveness from every great Sin.

On Behalf of the Group
Abu Abdelrahman

‏For those Bahrainis who have a decent brain cell left, please read, re-read and question what you’re doing to this country by dancing over the cadavers of who should be your brothers and sisters in nationality if nothing else.

‏This war of eradication must stop. The retribution must stop. This witch hunt must stop.

‏Everything over the top topples on its creator, and this wonderful article is a clear notice that the tidal change is starting to happen and its about time.

‏I was beginning to lose hope as almost everywhere I look around me, almost all that I have read since that fateful day in mid-March is laced with unmitigated hate, absolute loathing against the Shia of Bahrain who have been smeared with every traitorous label imaginable and then some. They have been stripped of their humanity because they did nothing but demand the recognition of inalienable rights to ALL Bahrainis, not just themselves. It is this reaction more than anything else made me at some points detest the country of my birth and no, I’m not the only one, I have heard the exact same reaction from countless others who I know have been moderate and liberal. But maybe now, thanks to bu Abdulrahman, our faith might start to rebuild and the damage – though will take a very long time, probably a generation or more – will start to get repaired.

‏Let me share with you the article I was referred to which – to me at least – represents a possible start of the healing process because it recognises the facts and represents them as they should be, with a truthful introspection. I urge you all to do the same. For the sake of our community as a whole.

‏Forgive me for not translating this important article, I don’t have the talent to do it justice, but if any of you would, please do and I shall be happy to credit your efforts and shall represent the translated version directly beneath this one.

‏Again, thank you bu Abdulrahman. We have a lot of work to do and we should never give up on Bahrain. It’s worth a lot more than the immense damage it sustained over the last couple of months.

ØŸ

It’s all about SEX.

Yesserie Bob. It’s aallll about the sex.

First, my good friend SaudiWoman is angered by the resurgence of that infantile fatwa designed to – wait for it – Shari’a compliant gender integration by condoning and encouraging women to breast feed unrelated men in order for them to be considered milk-mother and son; hence, allowed under the Shari’a to mingle.

The practical consideration is that us men – being completely and utterly aroused by such an action with bombs going off in our heads that now suckling is concluded, we now just have to get to third base, a feeling which somewhat nullifies the intent of creating a mother/son relationship at best.

Another practical consideration SaudiWoman reminds us of is that for a women to be considered a “milk-mother” in Shari’a, she must have suckled a child of under 2 years of age, a minimum of 5 complete meals at breast. Now, in order for a woman to lactate, she must have been with child very recently, but the quantity of milk produced is hardly enough to satiate a babe and she is right to question the ability of any women’s capacity to produce 5 full meals enough to fill a grown man.

I guess the guys issuing that fatwa just didn’t realise that such production is not actually on-tap, nor is it generated by pressing a ubiquitous button. It’s simple biology. Scientific, in other words, rather than esoteric hearsay. That is, apart from all the other moral, ethical and yes, even practical considerations.

Talking about practical considerations, there is a brouhaha brewing in our fair isle. Again concerning sex. But this time, a (presumably Sharia-compliant) sex-shop owner is on a slippery slope due to poking tongue at a Customs officer. Said officer apparently had umbrage with some of the more salacious products she was trying to slip through his unusually tight nets.

The 32-year-old mother-of-three appeared before the Lower Criminal Court yesterday, accused of insulting a Customs officer in a row as she tried to import some of her products, which include sex aids and games.

The case was adjourned until September 15, but Ms Ahmed, who denies the charge, says it has already cost her a night in a police cell and lost income on products blocked by Customs.

Customs officials say some of the products which Ms Ahmed tries to import are unauthorised.

But Ms Ahmed argues that some are already on sale in pharmacies and other stores and that she is doing nothing wrong, since her target customers are married couples.

GDN – 25 May 2010

While I shall not hazard a guess at what those products might be, the statement that they are actually already are available at “pharmacies and other stores” is really troubling, from health rather than pleasure considerations. But I shall reserve judgement on those until more details become available.

The interesting thing in this particular matter is that we actually have such a shop already operating for a couple of years, situated in the middle of Jid Ali, which I suspect is a conservative village attached to Isa Town, and that the creative businesswoman has built up a large customer base. Good on her. I hope her business continues to flourish, and that she should stop justifying its existence by psychological and religious grounds. If adults are into what she sells, then more power to them.

What’s the connection between the two events then you might ask? Sex. Is the first thing that comes to mind. The second of course is that if our government doesn’t let her go about her business in the presumably legal manner she has already been operated under, and is banned from selling her products based on some man’s squeamish perception of what is good and proper, or worse, on convoluted religious grounds, then convergence might just happen, and like the illustrious Saudi and Egyptian clerics, our home grown clerics will dare to best them!

Do we really want that eventuality?

Bloody Durazis!

Homies in Duraz wanted to exercise their inalienable right of self flagellation by way of swords, but others in the same village had a different idea.

Duraz, is a small village to the west of the capital Manama. Its population is in the thousands. It’s minute when compared with others in the world, but huge when you consider Bahrain’s size and constitution. It is said that it was once an ancient capital of Bahrain. More importantly, it’s current claim to fame is the fact that it counts the leading cleric in Bahrain – Shaikh Isa Qassim – as one of its residents.

Anyway, Haidar, as you will see from the picture below:

Photo credit: Mazin Mahdi via Flickr

is the act of slitting one’s head allowing a profuse flow of blood. Gory. Unhealthy. Gross. Unnecessary. But some people believe that it’s a legitimate way to express one’s abject grief for the martyrdom of the Prophet’s grandson, Imam Hussain bin Ali in Karbala, modern day Iraq in 680AD.

The slit is normally administered (in Bahrain at least) by a medic and the swords are really just for show (normally) where they are used to pound on that slit with their flat sides to keep the flow of blood and prevent it congealing, otherwise it will defeat the purpose. Obviously.

The Duraz-Haidar-Homies got slashed and started their precession within the village, shouting “HAIDAR” as they walked – a blood chilling war cry when you’re close, believe me – much to the chagrin of those who don’t believe in such a thing because their clerics think of the tradition as “haram”. It’s not a thing of health or even consideration for the martyr whose memory they want to preserve; it reads to me at least, as a power play between those who ally themselves with one cleric who condones haidar and other forms of flagellations against those who chose to follow another who doesn’t.

It is my understanding that Shaikh Isa Qassim doesn’t condone haidar and prefers a more sedate forms of expressions of grief. Being the religious supremo in the country as far as some of the Shi’a are concerned, and enjoying the following of the vast majority of Durzis, his opinion counts. Essentially then, this incident was down to religious political power interpretation first and foremost.

So a fight erupted! Hot-heads (some bleeding) started with a shouting match which escalated to hurled rocks, the use of sticks to beat each other with and some cars and other properties got damaged in the way.

Why they didn’t use their swords to hack each other with is surprising and confusing! Were they actually just some of those retractable rubber thingies? Or just didn’t work? Too blunt maybe? No idea. In any case, it’s a brave person who actually – basically – calls a bloody sword wielding man a chicken and engages him with sticks and stones! I wonder if anyone filmed the incident. It would be interesting to watch!

A couple of days after the incident, Al-Wasat carries a piece that the Shura Council member Ali Al-Asfoor who (I think) hails from the same village is now offering to compensate anyone who suffered damage due to the fracas! [arabic link]

Excuse me Ali, if you do that, how the hell are they going to take responsibility for their stupidity? Both in performing Haidar and for those involved in the fight and mayhem? Or is this a publicity stunt on your part to drag more people to your side of the fence? Are you (or your family/dynasty/whatever you want to call it) jealous of Qassim’s power in the village and country and you want to get some of it back? What’s the motive behind such a grand gesture then?

Anyway, this Haidar and self flagellation business is not going to go anywhere soon. My betting is that Haidar and the controversy and passions surrounding it will appear again next year, in the same villages, in the same occasions, and it – like a lot of other things taking over our lives in Bahrain – is more about politics and power than anything to do with religion or culture and tradition for that matter.

The good thing; however, is that some opposition to engrained customs and traditions is occurring. Maybe this is a sign of cultural progress. Who knows, maybe the next step could actually be the adoption of dialogue to resolve differences.

If programming languages were religions…

C++ would be Islam – It takes C and not only keeps all its laws, but adds a very complex new set of laws on top of it. It’s so versatile that it can be used to be the foundation of anything, from great atrocities to beautiful works of art. Its followers are convinced that it is the ultimate universal language, and may be angered by those who disagree. Also, if you insult it or its founder, you’ll probably be threatened with death by more radical followers.

The contrast of the romantic drippings of the apparently hugely popular dubbed Turkish soap Gümüs and the criminal bombings in that country yesterday as well as those in Iraq and India which left over 100 dead and many more injured, cannot be brought more into focus than the exclusive and vociferous condemnation of the television serial by the grand mufti of Saudi Arabia – its highest religious authority:

Stars of Turkish soap irritate Saudi religious authorities
Stars of Turkish soap irritate Saudi religious authorities

“It is not permitted to look at these serials or watch them. They contain so much evil; they destroy people’s ethics and are against our values,” said the mufti during the closing ceremony of a forum, which took place in Riyadh on Friday. He added that these “malicious” Turkish soap operas corrupt individuals and spread vice in society.

Yet we heard not even a shy beep of objection by the same respected gentleman against the cowardly and criminal bombing acts perpetrated by his own co-religionists against other human beings. To him and his ilk, it seems that a little romance is much more devastating than bombs which rip people to shreds.

“Any TV station that airs them is against God and His Messenger (peace be upon him). These are serials of immorality. They are prepared by people who are specialists in crime and error, people who invite men and women to the devil.” – ed: my emphasis

Someone should remind the gentleman to reset his priorities, don’t you think? While he would probably not hesitate an instant to call those perpetrators of terror across the world as “martyrs” in the full knowledge of their heinous crimes simply because they call themselves Muslims and belong to his clique, he wantonly discards a whole television station and its millions of viewers from God’s mercy.

I wonder if someone reminded the gentleman of the fact that the owners of said offending station are actually his employers, would he change his mind and be the first to plaster himself in front of his own silver screen in anticipation of more syrupy words of love from the effervescent Mohanned imparted to the luscious Noor?

“Gulf Idol” lands in jail!

If you’re a Muslim, you know how sensitive Muslims are about their religion. Heck, wars are still being waged for what some might regard as frivolous excuses. So going on a stunt like the following demonstrates either the stupidity of the person in question, or maybe that alcohol is really not good for you as it impairs one’s judgement.

The Lower Criminal Court yesterday (Monday) sentenced a Gulf national to three months in jail after entering the King Fahad Causeway mosque without removing his shoes and while smoking a cigarette. He also proceeded to sing a song through the mosque’s pubic address system. The court charged him with denigrating the Islamic religion in a public way. Causeway police arrested the gentleman when they heard his singing on the mosque’s loudspeakers.
Al-Wasat – 15 Apr 2008

What a twerp! The fool should be thankful for being caught and sentenced in Bahrain. Had that been a few meters away – literally – he would have gotten a lot more than he bargained for. Head chopping wouldn’t be too severe I should think.

Unfortunately the news piece did not carry any information about the song being sung. Has anyone any idea what it might be?
