I was rooting for the French for most of the game last night, and both played brilliantly; however, that Zidane brainfart moment was just too much. I have no idea what the other player said to him, and I’m betting it is something deeply personal or racist, but regardless, it was Zidane’s last game in his international career, and he tossed the brilliance of his play away and he might now be just remembered for that head-butt.
Stupid.
Well done Italy! You deserved the win.

Forza Azzurri!
Lippi has once again prooved what a great tactician he is.. Grande Marcelo!!
What a tournament… for the past three years, i’ve been realistically assessing Italy’s chances for the mondiali.. My only regret, is that Paolo Maldini wasn’t a part of the team.. Canna never put a wrong foot in, what a brilliant display by the Captain.. a well deserved victory..
The Jinx has been broken.. i can finally go out and buy myself a Jersey it’s been 6 years.. which one though??
And I win the office bragging rights pool..
today is a good day..
good game ..
VIVA ITALIA 🙂

American Samoa? =)
in a twisted superstitious personally created reality.. i feel that my support of the italian national team and my wearing their jersey during big tournaments has led them losing.. 94 penalty shootout, 98 penalties, 00 final minutes.. since the euro 2000, i stopped buying any italian national team jerseys or memorabilia until they win something.. and now it ends.. my canna jersey will be procured soon enough..
balboa carter actually..
Yeah, I kinda felt the same about the Socceroos shirt. I planned never to buy one until they qualified for the WC. Then they did and I still didn’t buy one. Mainly because I felt like I look like a middle-aged wannabe. So I settled for buying one for my newborn son. Unfortunately they don’t have any small enough. I think I’ll wait until he’s a little older then buy one =).
BTW being Italian I have both the home and away Italia shirts from 98 and the home one from 02. But as with the Socceroos shirt I’m too old. I think once you reach 35 you’re falling into mid-life crisis territory. I’ll probably end up getting the jacket or polo shirts and leave the ‘shirt’ to my son. Maybe he’ll end up wearing a real one.
The italian guy is well known problem maker…check this;

Yes Matarazzo is known to be a trouble maker, but Zidane as a professional and a world-class player had no excuse in performing that headbutt having himself sent off in his last match and devastating the morale of his teammates as an inspirational figure. Personally I think that this goatish performance befitted him cuz I don’t like Zidane, simple as that!
Italy maintained their composure and won it through perfectly delivering the penalties. Well done and mabrook to all TRUE Italy fans. And tough luck to all the rest (I was an England and Brazil follower so it saddened me them leaving so soon in the tournament), your time will come in coming tournaments, this one is taken to its home in Rome for now.
The problem with Zidane’s brain explosion is how do you tell a kid not to respond in kind when the opposition insults them? To make matters worse, they rewarded the guy with the Golden Ball. Great example for the kids. Stupid. Just monumentally stupid.
Exactly skribe, but the thing is, the voting was done after the first half. Next time, they should wait till the tournament is over so that they ensure that someone with the title of Golden Ball actually will deserve it. Plus you never know what kind of surprises might happen in the last half of the final game.
How sad it was to see the one of greatest ever footballers bow out in such a way. It was a disgraceful act for Zizou, yet I couldn’t help but feel a tiny bit of joy to see Materazzi, one of the dirtiest players of the game, get a taste of his own medicine on behalf of all non-Inter fans.
Remember when Shevchenko headbutted Materazzi in the Champions League? It’s not by mere coincidence that everyone is trying to headbutt him!
Yahoo, thanks for the link. Wow, Materazzo really plays dirty.
LiB: Yeah, likewise Kahn wouldn’t have won it in 2002.
chanad: He tried that on us and we gave it right back, so he tried more and got red carded =).
That does not make sense to vote for something before a game is over and done with. Especially since in the last moments people can make some exceptionally unbelievalbe plays. tss.
C’est dommage for the french indeed. And as for Materazzi, did he not also try to hold Zidane back? It happened kinda quick so I don’t remember if that was him or another player. I think it was him though. Someone should have told Zidane how to fight back with words in Italian, here’s two: Bruto Stupido!
Ingrid
Well congrats Italy and hard luck France. I tell you guys, here in London, it has been crazy, easily 100,000 people went out last night.
About the Marco Materazzi incident, a report claimed that he told Zidane that he’s a “terrorist” since he has Algerian roots. Zidane has a weak side and he got played on it. Yes, he was provoked but he has no excuses.
At the end, again, hard luck France and Forza Ragazzi.
Just to add to my post above, here is the link from the BBC. They don’t say what the comment was but again, I think it’s what I mentioned above.

>It was a disgraceful act for Zizou
What do you mean it was a disgraceful act??? If every act were judged in isolation then we’d all be pretty disgraceful people.
From all the reports that I’ve read so far, the Italian mofo said to Zidane one of four things:
1. Terrorist/Bin Laden/Islamic Terrorist
2. Cursed his mother
3. Cursed his sister
4. Made fun of his disabled child
Just think for a second, would Zidane, knowing that this is his last match, the WC final and with only 10 minutes to go, do something like that if “he” didn’t think it was justified? It’s easy to say things like “Oh, but regardless, he should have kept his calm…” Yeah, well maybe those who think like that need to wake up and realize that there are things that are more important than football!
And, umm…anyone who disagrees with me is gay.
i think it was all about time & stress , and a tiny thing that Matrix said 2 Zuzu and made him do that …
Other reasons were created by the Media …
According to some reports, that “tiny” thing might have just been the following:
Zidane: Ordinanza di tirare il costume
Stop pulling my shirt!
Materazzi: Taciti, enculo, hai solamente cio che merite
Shut up you butt f****d one, you are only getting what you deserve
Zidane: Si e cio
Yeah, that’s it
Materazzi: Meritate tutti ciò, voi gli enculato di musulmani, sporchi terroristici
You all deserve it, you butt f****d Muslims are all dirty terrorists
hehehe im not deffending Matrix over here … but it just could be anything ..
From Yeah he called him that to piss em off , to hey gaylord how is your mum .. who cares …
and your “some reports ” are the Media .. huh !
Gotta give the French team credit for not trashing him.
Despite being an Inter fan, I concur with Heyder…anyone who disagrees with what zidane did is gay…
Bottom line: zidane has exhibited violent behaiviour on the pitch before, matrix exploited that successfully, ultimately though, it did not have a bearing on the outcome of the game – the french hadn’t scored all game from open play and it was trezegol who missed the only penalty.
It’s called gamesmanship and every other player has to grin and bear it. The wogs won.
