Thanks Maz. I was just making a general observation because since I installed the Akismet spam blocker on this site, it has stopped 56,353 spam comments while Bad Behavior has blocked 14291 access attempts in just the last 7 days…
And don’t get me started on the number of spam emails I get on the server per day!
Thanks to spam, I know that somebody cares about my sex life…… :tongue: :biggrin: my daily does of viagra and %!#$@ enlargement ads and ads for drugs etc….Jeez, it never ends…
MS Outlook need too many definitions. I did some defining thinking of as many bad words I could, then even important mail was getting auto deleted. So I have to stop the automatic emptying of my trash bin everytime I exited the program.
However on another note Nod32 from Eset is a great antivirus tool and has excellent heuristic scanning sofware.

heuristics won’t work any more as the bastards have started to send images rather than text, or obfuscated text in images! :angry:

I installed a captcha plugin. It stopped the “spambot” comments cold in their tracks.
Most people dislike having to enter the code so I edited the script to use only numbers.
Mahmood do you have Bad Behavior & Akismet working with MU?

I’m just about to do that Bill. I’ve got permission from Akismet to use it as such as the aggregator is community based and free. BB works with it out of the box I think.
Bot of course (I now realise) have to be installed in the mu-plugins folder rather than the usual plugins folder.
I’m still experimenting.

Sorry, spoke too soon. Both are not working in the MU environment yet, I’m working on it.
I installed them both in plugins and they seem to show up not sure if they are going to catch anything since the site is new but I can configure both. I need to contact Akismet and ask to use it and for the MU specific plugin.

I think you will find that if you install them like that (/wp-content/plugins) every single blog owner has to individually activate those plugins with their own authorisation strings. At least for Akismet. BB I’m not sure of. But I’ll read more about them in their site, or ditch it altogether and go for Lyceum which has the plugin management out of the box in a much better way, they say.
I had to post just a little comment on this one. My husband just installed a new spam server that he absolutely loves. It’s called a Barracuda, and he set it up on a thirty day trial for the school district he works for, and since he flicked the switch to turn it on, about 90 percent of all incoming emails are being blocked… all SPAM! The teachers there love him now! And I think there would be a riot on campus if the district decides not to buy it after their thirty days.

Thanks for that Amanda, I’ll check it out. I use SpamAssassin for the office and although I am sure it is stopping a lot of spam from being distributed on the network, quite a lot does get through, which is a waste of time and effort.
