She’s a piece of trailer trash who made it big. Good for her, sucks for the rest of us who have to put up with her bellyaching.
All the DC area morning radio shows can’t let a day go by without taking a pot shot at Kevin Federline (native son of Laurel MD, a trashy nether region between Washington and Baltimore). Some it funny, most of it annoying.
For the record, I think Eminem has more class in his little finger than she will ever have. EVER. And that’s saying a lot.

Well, Malik, this is one of those rare instances where I am in complete agreement with you. I have never heard Britney sing – pop music is not my thing – so I can’t speak to her talent (or lack thereof). You are correct. In five years everyone will be asking “Britney who”, just like they’ve done with every other “pop tart” before her. I’ll give Madonna credit for being a good businesswomen and keeping herself relevant when the normal lifespan of pop music stars is only a few years. Now that she’s older and saggier, she can”t sell herself by prancing around half nekkid, so she’s made herself into a “family values mom” who’s “into” religion.
Hollywood indeed makes money selling bad taste but I think the tolerance for that is wearing thin lately. Movie profits are down, stars act like idiots, and people are getting turned off.

Add that to the cost of a soda and slice of pizza at the theater almost MORE than the cost of the admission price and people are voting with their wallets. At least in Europe I can get a BEER while I watch 90 mins of garbage.

I am a classical music fan myself. I listen to other stuff, all across the board from Arabic music to bluegrass, but at the end of the day it begins and ends with classical music. I was raised on it. I remember coming home as a kid, about age 12, having found out about rock music at school, and my father hitting the roof about me listening to “that crap.”

Well, at least in Europe you don’t have to wade THROUGH garbage on your way to a seat. The theaters in Europe I visited did not allow food in the auditorium. It was a pleasure not having your shoes sticking to everything on the way out.
It’s not just expense that keeps me from the movies. The flicks are just of poor quality. Shoot-em-up-blow-em-up action movies, tasteless and stupid comedies, useless re-makes, etc … I’d just rather have a good book.

Dad was right. I listened to pop music throughout high school and college, then realized what garbage it was right after I graduated, LOL! It’s been instrumental synth music and international folklore music ever since.

I go through phases with my music just like I do with my reading. I will go for months just reading non fiction then switch to fiction. It is the same with music. I can go months on a certain type of music then switch overnight to something else. My better half loves the lounge synth music.

Sorry, but I refuse to think that just because someone has made loads of money they have any real value. Is the amount of money someone makes the deciding factor on their worth? For an artist the real test of talent and success will be if their music is listened to and appreciated in 50 or 100 years. Yes, she has made loads of money, probably more than most people reading this blog. What does that mean at the end of the day? She is just a really successful media prostitute. Hollywood is full of people who have made millions because of the lack of taste in popular culture, she is just another prime example. 100 years from now people will still be listening to Beethoven’s Ode to Joy(An Die Freude) with glee and when asked about this two bit performer they will say “Brittany” who?

Aliandra,
You might check out “Crash” at the movies. It was pretty good. On DVD, “The 13th Warrior” is still pretty good with Antonio Banderas playing the Arab hero in a reworking of Beowulf. For a rather weird but fascinating documentary on DVD, see “Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr.”

Jasra, Jasra, Jasra, you know better than this. Pablo Escobar had a greater net worth than all of us, yet I have no desire to become an international drug lord. Tom Cruise is a wanker. From Penelope Cruze to Katie Holmes? Is he insane? Judging from his recent actions, I would say yes. But I think this is more of a midlife crisis. Every time I turn around he is pumping his arms in the air, getting down on his knees, doing back flips, you name it. I have never cared for him much anyway, and this makes it worse. I think it is a midlife crisis coupled with a Napoleon type short man’s insecurity.

It would seem that if the CIA is right we are in for major trouble in the future. Look at this portion from the Egyptian paper al-Ahram:
“In the late 1980s, Al-Zarqawi joined the jihad against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. After the defeat of the Soviets, Al- Zarqawi went back to Jordan with a radical Islamist agenda and joined an extremist sheikh, Abu Mohamed Al-Maqdisi, in forming the Al-Tawhid group. ”
This is exactly what the CIA says is happening and is going to happen with Iraq. The difference being here than most Afghani jihadis didn’t fight an urban war, whereas Iraqi jihadis will have this experience. If we got al-Queda from Afghanistan, it would seem probable to conceive that we will get something worse from Iraq.
anonymous
Re(5): green eyed steve
Malik,
The most common experience the jihadis are getting from urban combat in Iraq with the US military is death. The foreign jihadis are incompetent, full of hate, no brains. They consistently lose in combat with well-trained soldiers. The gung ho rhetoric they get back in their home mosques does not match the reality of Iraq, where dimwitted and clueless jihadis get shot down like rats in a junkyard. As one military officer observed, the jihadis went to Afghanistan to fight, they go to Iraq to die.
Quite frankly, that’s a good thing. That fulfills the strategy of using Iraq as a giant bug zapper for terrorists. I’d much rather have them fight our soldiers overseas than our stewardesses at home.
Some other things to think about: The CIA study is speculative as to what the result will be. You might notice their use of the word “may” rather asserting their case as fact. It would be great if the dumb jihadis thought they could win through urban guerrilla tactics because in the history of warfare, urban guerrillas always lose. They are too easy to find and kill.
Quite frankly, that’s a good thing. That fulfills the strategy of using Iraq as a giant bug zapper for terrorists. I’d much rather have them fight our soldiers overseas than our stewardesses at home.
Silly argument and totally ignores what the CIA is saying. We are fighting them there, we are training them there, and we will be fighting them everywhere. They idea that we are “fighting them over there so we don’t have to fight them here” is nonsense.

Urban Guerrillas always loose? Really? Ever heard of Algeria? They don’t always loose, and guerilla movements are almost never entirely urban. As to how easy it is to kill jihadis, any news about Osama or Ayman al Zawahiri yet? Besides their own videos that they release on a regular basis? You just cannot admit the fact that you could be wrong! Not all jihadis are going to be killed in Iraq, not even close. What happens to these men when they are done in Iraq is the important question. There are going to be thousands of them returning to Europe, the Middle East, and even the US in the coming years. All it takes is one or two of them to train a cell that could cause major havoc. What of them? I think we ignore this at our own risk.

Yes, it is so difficult that we have hundreds of thousands of uneducated Central and South American illegals slipping into the US every year. If uneducated Latinos can slip into the USA, what is to keep educated (most of the 9/11 attackers had college degrees) former Jihadis from slipping into the USA? As to what is Europe’s problem, what do you think their targets might be? US bases? Embassies? US companies? If the Jihadis want to they will get into the US, no problem. One of the other problems with Iraq is that we are creating a whole new pool potential terrorists that are not on any watch list anywhere. So where has many Middle Easterners are now staying away from the US for school and business, some of these types, with no record of any type, are going to be more than interested.

Because Americans are quite comfortable hiring spanish speaking illegals with names like Pedro and Carlos. They know enough not to hire middle-eastern men with no papers, no fluency in spanish, and who have names like Ahmed and Abdul instead of Pedro and Carlos.
If it were that simple for jihadis to learn fluent Spanish, slip into Mexico, brave a foriegn desert, deal with four and two-legged coyotes, and sneak across the border, they would already have done so and we’d have been witness to their explosive antics. As it is, going to Iraq is a lot less trouble. People speak your langage, you can blend with the natives, and there’s local support for your cause.

You must keep up Aliandra. The US has arrested at least one suspected terrorist at the Mexican border. It is said that certain areas of Central and South America are a virtual terrorists “Mecca” so to speak. Hizb’Allah has enough knowledge of the area, and the language, it would seem, that they have been implicated in a drug dealing/money raising operation in Latin America making millions every year.
“South America, long an area active with radicalized Marxist thugs and terrorists, is considered by some analysts to be a potential danger zone in the future. Long-standing anti-Americanism there might take new expression in league with Islamist jihadists, and the continent is not a stranger to Islamist terrorist attacks. The Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires was bombed in 1992, and the Argentine-Jewish Cultural Center two years later.” http://www.fightingterror.org/threat/part2.cfm
“International law-enforcement authorities combating terrorism have growing concerns about a major influx into the Latin American nation of Paraguay of Arabic-speaking visitors carrying European passports. Some of these “Europeans” could not even speak the language of their so-called mother land, according to a report in the latest issue of Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin, an online premium intelligence newsletter published by WND. <http://www.g2bulletin.com>”
Many of the visitors and emigres travel to the triple border region where Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay meet. This region, often described as a lawless area, is nicknamed by some intelligence station agents as “The Muslim Triangle meeting zone.” Intelligence experts have been warning since the late 1990s they had noticed a tendency among Islamic terrorists to operate from Paraguay, a landlocked country in the heart of South America” http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=35881

No, the USA has supported brutal dictators who have slaughtered hundreds of thousands of their co-religionists. The US has set up a double standard of “one law for us, another law for them” with out allies, Israel being the prime example. Israel is in violation of international law and numerous UN resolutions and Security Council resolutions, yet we do nothing. US based part of its rational for invading Iraq on violation of UN resolutions. Don’t you see the hypocrisy there?
This, in reality, has very little to do with religion. If the people in the area were Christian it would make little difference. This is all about foreign policy. Dislike of American foreign policy cuts across all religious and ethnic barriers. The only way this will end is if the US takes an honest and open look at their policies. I think it is in our best interest because much of our policy is detrimental to our interests.

You originally claimed that Americans would not hire them, but rather Hispanic immigrants, now this is about legal immigration? I guess you might not know but there are thousands of Arab students in the US right now with legal visas. They are not too hard to get and considering that the jihadis coming back from Iraq will not be on any watch list anywhere, they would have little or no problem getting into the USA. My wife’s family are friends with the head of the Saudi Cultural Mission here in DC and I can assure you that someone that is not on any watch list will get a visa here to the USA, and have the Saudi government giving them $2,000 a month and paid tuition to do it.
Besides, you are fighting the last war. This is one of the major failings of our system here. The terrorists got in legal last time, are they going to do it that way again? Maybe, maybe not, or more likely, use both methods.

They do not play games, do not tolerate competition, and will deal with any intrusion into the business. The problem will take care of itself.
Aliandra, Hizb’Allah were working with the drug dealers. The dealers and traffickers will work with anyone who opens new avenue and new markets for them. It is about money, and apparently Hizb’Allah was making enough money for them that it worked out just fine. They operated for years without getting caught. One instance. How many other operations from how many other groups are operating now and havent been caught?

South America, long an area active with radicalized Marxist thugs and terrorists, is considered by some analysts to be a potential danger zone in the future. Long-standing anti-Americanism there might take new expression in league with Islamist jihadists
Any area with thugs is a potential danger zone and that’s probably one fourth of the world. Read carefully and you’ll see it says “might. Terror analysts need to justify their paychecks and inserting the word “might into every one of those hotspots does that admirably.
If you knew more about intelligence analysts you would know that they almost ALWAYS qualify their statements with “might” and “maybe.” If you disregarded intelligence statements with those words and ideas you would have NO intelligence pool to draw from at all.
If you think the focus of Islamic radical anger is the “marginalisation” of European Muslims you are wrong.
That’s not what I said. I said Europe will be open for lots of civil unrest because of the marginalization. The jihadis will be happy to have a cause to fight for.
”This, in reality, has very little to do with religion. If the people in the area were Christian it would make little difference. This is all about foreign policy. Dislike of American foreign policy cuts across all religious and ethnic barriers.” Ya think? Some of them ARE christians. But how come it’s not Buddhists, Shintos, Hindus, Christians, and Parsees blowing up American interests in the name of their gods? How come none of the above are lobbing bombs at Iraqi police stations? #
Like I have said before, it is a political conflict that is drapped in religion. If you look at the stated goals of al-Qaeda and similar groups you’ll find their main and immidiate goals are all political. You’ll find that their recruitment isnt really based on setting up a world caliphate, it is about US and Western foreign policy. As to others “killing for their Gods” you find radical Hindus have slaughtered thousands of Muslims in India and passed laws that make it illegal to convert from Hinduism. If you look in Asia Buddhist have a long history of conflict with each other(for religious reasons), as well as the oppression of religious minorities, including Christians and Muslims. Christians in Bosnia murdered hundreds of thousands of people recently for their faith. In Uganda a group of fanatical Christians have murdered over one million people in order to force their country to submit to their version of Christianity. As to Parsees, I guess they too worried about trying to avoid women on their periods so as to not “die or become sterile”.
Explain the first suicide bomber in the Middle East? A Lebanese Christian? Martyred for 72 virgins? I dont think so. Explain the most prolific suicide bombers pre-Iraqi occupation, Hindu Tamils.
Malik: Silly argument and totally ignores what the CIA is saying. We are fighting them there, we are training them there, and we will be fighting them everywhere. They idea that we are “fighting them over there so we don’t have to fight them here” is nonsense.
As usual, Malik, you insist on your own interpretation of a document. When the CIA says something “may” happen, it is proposing a scenario, not reporting events.
Most of the jihadis with combat experience in Iraq are dead. The ones who survive to return to Saudi Arabia, Syria, and North Africa will have had no significant combat experience, which is why they survived. It looks like Zarqawi is using them for suicide fodder anyway.
The fact that you think the Iraq-as-terrorist-bug-zapper strategy is nonsense is very nearly proof that it must be true. Here’s something to chew on: Lots of dumb jihadis going to Iraq to fight the Americans, no jihadis showing up in America to fight our stewardesses. Now what’s the reason behind that? Is that just coincidence? Did the Wahhabis in Saudi Arabia change heart and start teaching their kids the Pledge of Allegiance to the US flag?
Here’s another fact to chew on. One account from the jihadis who survived Fallujah pointed out that the Saudis were welcome because they brought big wads of cash with them. One Saudi jihadi had $27,000 on him. Now that’s plenty of money to buy an airline ticket to Mexico, slip across the border, buy a gun, and go on a rampage. But he went to Iraq instead. Why? Because it’s next door.
By the way, he died. He never got to bag his American infidel. He got bagged instead. Zap!
Malik: Urban Guerrillas always loose? Really? Ever heard of Algeria? They don’t always loose, and guerilla movements are almost never entirely urban.
OK, Algeria is not a bad rebuttal. However, urban guerrilla movements in Western Europe did not fare well opposing the Nazis, who rolled them up relentlessly.
Malik: As to how easy it is to kill jihadis, any news about Osama or Ayman al Zawahiri yet? Besides their own videos that they release on a regular basis?
Yes, their survival no doubt fills you with pride, but you might recall that two thirds of the management of Al Qaeda & Co are dead or in prison. That does sound like a turn for the worse, doesn’t it? The fact that all they produce now are video threats is proof of their weakness. Al Qaeda is over.
Malik: You just cannot admit the fact that you could be wrong!
What a talent for irony you have, Malik.
Malik: Not all jihadis are going to be killed in Iraq, not even close.
Iraq is a meatgrinder for jihadis like Afghanistan never was. That’s why the Wahhabi websites are full of martyr stories rather than war stories from veteran jihadis.
Malik: What happens to these men when they are done in Iraq is the important question. There are going to be thousands of them returning to Europe, the Middle East, and even the US in the coming years. All it takes is one or two of them to train a cell that could cause major havoc. What of them? I think we ignore this at our own risk.
I don’t see them as much of a risk. Raging around the Iraqi countryside with your jihadi buddies is not good preparation for infiltrating American society to perpetrate atrocities for the glory of Islam. You need to fit in, keep a low profile. Al Qaeda had plenty of Afghan jihad veterans around in 2001 but it chose virgins for the Sep 11 attacks, Muslim kids jazzed up on hate but with little experience of anything. As long as we have the Patriot Act, we have a shot at hunting them down.
As for Europe, this is one case where I must admit Europe is doing a more vigorous job of chasing down the damned Wahhabites than the US. France tosses them out for no reason at all. European secret police are not hindered so much as our FBI by individual rights. Even the Scandinavian nations are chucking them out.
As for the Middle East, I think that a splendid destination for the wayward jihadi back from Iraq. The regimes there are, shall we say, aggressive in their persecution of such types. I imagine that for a jihadi lodged in the bowels of an Egyptian prison, Gitmo must seem like Disneyland. One officer at Gitmo has written that several detainees taken to the airport, bound for the Middle East, have refused to board the jet and demand to stay at Gitmo, where they are safe. Yes, the Middle Eastern governments know what to do with the jihadis without troubling themselves about accidently dropping their Korans or having legal hearings or complying with the Geneva Conventions.

Steve, did you read the report where the CIA has said that Iraq is training terrorists that may be more effective than those that came out of Afghanistan? It would seem we are fighting( and training) them there so that they can come fight us here, there, and everywhere. There are already reports of jihadis going back home to places all over the Middle East and Europe. What do you think they are going to be up to with all of this new training the CIA is talking about?
Let me guess, the CIA is guilt of anti-American propaganda huh? The newest and latest arm of al Jazeera?
CIA describes Iraq as terrorist laboratory By Douglas Jehl The New York Times
THURSDAY, JUNE 23, 2005
WASHINGTON A new, classified assessment by the CIA says that Iraq may prove to be an even more effective training ground for Islamic extremists than Afghanistan was in Al Qaeda’s early days, because it provides a new laboratory for militants to hone their skills in urban combat.
The intelligence assessment was completed last month and has been circulated through U.S. government agencies, and it was described by several congressional and intelligence officials. They said it expresses a view that the war in Iraq is likely to leave a dangerous legacy by enabling Iraqi and foreign combatants who are likely to disperse to other countries to become much more adept, capable and mobilized than they were before the conflict.

Jasra, Jasra, Jasra, you know better than this. Pablo Escobar had a greater net worth than all of us, yet I have no desire to become an international drug lord. Tom Cruise is a wanker. From Penelope Cruze to Katie Holmes? Is he insane? Judging from his recent actions, I would say yes. But I think this is more of a midlife crisis. Every time I turn around he is pumping his arms in the air, getting down on his knees, doing back flips, you name it. I have never cared for him much anyway, and this makes it worse. Re(4): green eyed steve
http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2005/746/re6.htm
This is exactly what the CIA says is happening and is going to happen with Iraq. The difference being here than most Afghani jihadis didn’t fight an urban war, whereas Iraqi jihadis will have this experience. If we got al-Queda from Afghanistan, it would seem probable to conceive that we will get something worse from Iraq.
So the reports of jihadis going home to Europe and the Middle East are wrong?

Thousands, huh? I don’t think so. It is far too difficult now to enter the US. Any leftover jihadis will go back and bomb their own countries or stage productions in Europe, which has a large unassimilated and marginalized population of Muslims. That will be Europe’s problem, not ours.

The war in Iraq is not going to help the war on terror, it can do nothing but hurt it.

Europeans have already discovered plots to target the French water supply and other buildings. These are European installations, not American. Since their co-religionists are marginalized by their fellow European citizens, not Americans, the targets will be more of the same.

The Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires was bombed in 1992, and the Argentine-Jewish Cultural Center two years later.”
http://www.fightingterror.org/threat/part2.cfm
“International law-enforcement authorities combating terrorism have growing concerns about a major influx into the Latin American nation of Paraguay of Arabic-speaking visitors carrying European passports.
Some of these “Europeans” could not even speak the language of their so-called mother land, according to a report in the latest issue of Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin, an online premium intelligence newsletter published by WND. <http://www.g2bulletin.com>”
Many of the visitors and emigres travel to the triple border region where Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay meet. This region, often described as a lawless area, is nicknamed by some intelligence station agents as “The Muslim Triangle meeting zone.”
Intelligence experts have been warning since the late 1990s they had noticed a tendency among Islamic terrorists to operate from Paraguay, a landlocked country in the heart of South America”

What is the reson, Malik? At least we have you using the term ‘jihadis’ now, in which you at least recognize that they are, in fact, Muslims.

Allow me to retort for Malik. I suspect he will fire back with:

Steve, did you read the report where the CIA has said that Iraq is training terrorists that may be more effective than those that came out of Afghanistan? It would seem we are fighting( and training) them there so that they can come fight us here, there, and everywhere. There are already reports of jihadis going back home to places all over the Middle East and Europe. What do you think they are going to be up to with all of this new training the CIA is talking about?

CIA describes Iraq as terrorist laboratory
By Douglas Jehl The New York Times
