Moving again…

I’ve ordered a bigger server for my sites from RackSpace and it should be built and made available to me to migrate all the data into it in the next few days. Hopefully that will mean better reliability and availability of the sites.

The new server will also have a new IP address, so there might be an outage until the DNS servers get updated. Once I know what the new IP address is however, I’ll publish it so that you can connect through the IP in the transition period.

I hope this will be the last of the big outages for a long time to come.

Bear with me for the next few days…

UPDATE 060401: All sites (including bahrainblogs.org) except for gbps.tv and mahmood.tv have now been moved and are operational on the new server. I’ll get tech support to change the DNS settings for the last two sites to move them to the new server. The effect of this change is that we might lose a couple of comments in the changeover period which I will attempt to rescue somehow, rather than switching of commenting altogether. The new server’s speed is sweet!

ever thought of hosting in Bahrain?? Forget Batelco.. there are others coming out with hosting/security/internet services .. it would surely enhance the viewing and speed of the site for Bahrainis and other GCC countries if it were hosted here.. dont you think? would you consider?

aren’t most of the ISPs here in bahrain using batelco’s lines/servers anyways? more like resellers…and the others out here are practically resellers as well… i think rackspace was a good choice! maybe we can all shell some $$$ for bahrainblogs.org? Mahmood what do you think? it’s a blogger community service anyways – could we pool it?

Anon, short answer: NO. The power switch with them is far too easily thrown.

Angelo, I wish PayPal would work here as that would have solved a lot of problems. I’ll think about it though.

i know this is a weird question to ask but out of curiosity, what are the new server’s specs and how many hits are you getting a day? I want to learn from your experience if i ever get into the need for a more powerful server.

Yousif it’s an AMD 64bit server, 80GB drive, 1GB ram, 100Mb ethernet connection to the internet, Red Hat ES4, 100GB per month transfer.

As for the stats, the last time I looked it was between 3 – 4 million hits, 1.2 million page views a month, and about 6000 sessions a day.

The server has been built and put online today, so I’ll start migrating data and configuring various things starting tomorrow if I have time.

My present computer is a Sony Vaio VGC-RC210G with 4Gig fo RAM. Lo! I almost bought an Apple G-5 Quad, the operating system of which is a coveted OS-10, because I want the VERY BEST there is. Unfortunately, I also wanted some kick-assed software and the cheap bootleg versions were only available on a Windows PC…I only have sooo much money and, alas, I am not TOTALLY honest.

In any case, if anyone wants to attempt to hack me, I don’t care. I just hope that Mahmood gets HIS system right, whatever that takes, and continues to operate a WORLD CLASS blog.

    Thanks ya’ll.

Good Lord! You’re getting a Managed Server from Rackspace? Man, you take your blogging a little too seriously.

Although most of the resources will be taken by Mahmood’s Den, it will also house my company sites and my email, so it’s worth it! I tell you what though, I have not been let down by their technical support once in the last three years and that’s peace of mind that you can pay major bucks for with a smile!
