Frances bought this succulent about 5 or 6 years ago and it never flowered. All of a sudden about a month ago it started shooting this tall spike and clusters of flower buds are starting to take shape.
I’ve read a bit about them now and found out that some shoot their spike some 30 to 40 feet high! These plants also flower once in their lifetime and once flowered and seeds produced (at the same time) they die.
The Agave flower once between the age of 12 and 20 years. It looks this is our lucky year!

Once in a lifetime…
In the southwest section of America, we call this plant the century plant, and stories tell us it blooms every 100 years. I don’t believe I have heard of anyone who lived long enough to see one bloom twice! 🙂
Once in a lifetime…
I did not mean for that comment to be “anonymous”. I am Dagney of http://www.dagney007.blogspot.com The plant will take many weeks to bloom, so there should be lots of opportunity to take many more photos of it.
Re: Once in a lifetime…
Thank you Dagney!
Once in a lifetime…
wait a minute….size DOES matter…. :-0
Thats lucky that the plant flowered
Maybe you could try and take some shots from the same angle periodically, and do a timelapse shot. Might be a bit late now, as its already started.
Re: Once in a lifetime…
😉
I have been taking pictures of it, and can dig them out but to me they look uninteresting as they were. The plant is starting to get interesting just now, and of course I shall continue to document this unique event.
If you want to see how it gets a bit later, you can look to your left as you come down from Awali at the A’ali round-about. There are several of them and they are coincidentally flowering too, but at a much more advanced stage then this one. Worth taking your camera with you, I know I shall!
Re: Once in a lifetime…
We have century plants here on the big island although I have no idea how they got here. My favorite agave is the Blue Agave.

Once in a lifetime…
Isn’t the agave the plant that Mexicans make the liquor ‘tequila’ from?
Once in a lifetime…
Shshshshshsh hope that Al Saidi doesn’t lurk in your site mahmood, otherwise he may ask in Parlimant that your Agave be cut and all import of Agave banned, or Mohammed Khalid may lead a march to your house to destroy the Arave before you start producing Taquila .
Re: Once in a lifetime…
😆 Yes I know, he’s too single-track-minded to even consider that it’s a totally different Agave whose sap produces tequila!
But he can come and suck on mine for as long as he wants to taste the outcome himself!
Once in a lifetime…
Spelling check – destroy the Agave before you start producing Tequila –
