Saudi shook awake

The Saudi royal family has finally conceded that the root cause of Islamist terrorism has been its own Wahhabi ideology, and the kingdom has prohibited any reference to jihad in radio and television broadcasts, a Washington Times report said on Wednesday.

Following the Al Qaeda suicide bombings of apartment buildings in Riyadh on May 12 that killed 35, Saudi security and intelligence organizations reported what the royal family was loath to hear: Almost 1,000 Saudi clerics are either linked to, or in sympathy with, Al Qaeda. They have been fired or banned from addressing worshippers after Friday prayers, Arnaud de Borchgrave wrote for the Times.

and about time too. They’ve had their way for far too long branding anyone and everyone who opposes them a “kafir” (unbeliever) which could get you the death penalty. But even Rome crumbled and died, so why should we be so surprised to see the Saudi Authorities curtailing these religious nuts’ power?

Marriage of convenience it may have been, but now it looks like divorce. The attacks in Riyadh and even in the States have produced good results – not for the wahabis or other religious nuts around the world, but for the vast majority peaceful people who just want to get on with their lives. Thing like this are extremely unfortunate and cowardly acts, but to every cloud there is a silver lining.

I just hope that unlike the usual trends in the Arab and Muslim worlds which is mostly a knee-jerk reaction to a problem, this change will a studied long term plan. Authorities in the Muslim world will realize that conjoining religion and politics is not a very good idea. A much better one is to split them completely apart.

We will have peace, whether these terrorists want it or not. And not in the too distant future either.
