The Veiled Drivers redux

Bahraini parliament in action

Two Islamist MPs Adel Al-Moawadah (Asala – Sunni) and Abdulla Al-A’ali (Independent – Shi’i) had a verbal fight in the parliament yesterday, the former accusing the latter of hindering the bill even though he is a “man of religion! Al-A’ali is opposing the law allowing veiled women to drive, saying that in Islam a woman IS allowed to uncover her face.

What is REALLY worrying however is the chairman, Al-Dhahrani, announced that the law is agreed by majority while the committee’s secretary clearly said that no majority has been reached. Is Al-Dhahrani trying to rail-road this law regardless of getting consensus?

The games continue…

and this from the GDN today:

Veiled women should not be allowed to drive unless they carry a special card bearing a photograph of their unveiled face, recommends a parliamentary proposal to be submitted to the Cabinet for approval.

The new card should also give their full name, parents’ name, address and car registration number, Parliament Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee chairman Ahmad Behzad told our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej.

… and if you’re interested, read this on Bahraini.TV – a fuller report from the Gulf News

At least now they made it a bit more difficult for veiled women drives. Now they have to have their “uncovered” mug-shot in their driving license, and they will only be allowed to drive a registered car in their license, not just any car! Some win Mr. Islamist, huh? Feel happy that you wasted the parliament’s time and effort with this rubbish yet? Got any more? I’m sure they do!

    The Veiled Drivers redux

We’ve arranged a global civilization in
    which most crucial elements profoundly
depend on science and technology. We have
also arranged things so that almost no one
understands science and technology. This is
a prescription for disaster. We might get
away with it for a while. But sooner or later
this combustible mixture of ignorance and
power is going to blow up in our faces…
