I got this today in the email and as I’m between phone calls I’ll share this with you. Remember what I said earlier about Bahrainis being “nice number mad“? They’re about the same if not more with their cars. Don’t let Bahrain’s small size fool you though, “belonging” to a certain area, ethnic background, where you pray etc all hold weight too!
Car make : Area in Bahrain/Ethnic background/type
Cruiser : Riffa
Mitsubishi Galant : Muhrraq
Nissan Maxima: Hamad Town
Beat up old sports car with a CD hanging from the rear-view mirror: Isa Town

Smart : they think it’s cute : dickheads
BMW 740 : business men
Range Rover : Nice people

Beat up old piece of crap that’s stuck together with spit and chewing gum and painted with wall paint and hasn’t seen a spot of water since it was bought and a hazard to all road users yet takes care of it better than his donkey : villager
Opel : who MUST have a German car!
Thank goodness they don’t mention Porsche and Grand Cherokee owners! 😉
There you have it, a guide to Bahrain and Bahrainis through their cars.

Elitism and cars in Bahrain
A quick scan, and not a single one matches the cars with the ppl i know. You need to be a bit more imaginitive. Try again mate.
There is just one B***** in Bahrain who rides in a gold-plated hourse carriage. On that note I think i’ll just import a donkey-cart to also distinguish myself, rather than be categorised by petty-minded people like this.

hey chill out man… this was just for a laugh, so laugh!

Whats your number plate?
Re: Elitism and cars in Bahrain
haha… no problem.
Here’s the God’s honest truth man, I have NEVER remembered ANY of my number plates! NEVER. The only part of a number I remember is a car I had in college in Scotland (VW Golf) which is OGG and we used to call the car “Ogg”!
On graduation I drove it all the way to the Isle of White and gave it as a gift to my brother who just started college then… but the car only ran 2 cylenders by then and it made it over 900 miles! 🙂

Range Rover drivers are “nice people”? Nice as in dopey expat housewife taking her ‘big boned’ children on the school run? My advice to them is lady, you better use your wing mirrors and some common sense if you’re anywhere near me and I’m on my way to work because as far as I’m concerned one way or another you’re getting out of my way. Women like you make me want to go and live in Saudi Arabia.
Re: Elitism and cars in Bahrain
hahahhahehahahehea! you crack me up!

Damn it! I’m on there twice! My dad owns a Caprice LTZ and the driver has a Honda CRV which I’m VERY proud of! Although dad with his middle aged state of mind and denial of becoming 50+ wants to trade it in for… wait for it… GMC Suburban or Cadillac Escalade… do we look like we own livestock?! I’m the last child living in the house and I’m leaving for my master’s soon! If you’re going through a period of wanting a flashy car get an Alfa Romeo!!!!!
*sigh*

Re: Elitism and cars in Bahrain
The quintessential Saudi is NEVER away from his Caprice! You just cannot be a Saudi if you haven’t got a Caprice, how else would other drivers be warned to keep as far away as possible?! That’s what we do in Bahrain.. you see a Caprice on the road, be wary, you see one with Saudi number plates, PARK your car until the Caprice is far away in the distance! 🙂
But you dissapoint me with your choice of car though Sast, why Alfa Romeo? I would have thought nothing less than a Porsche would be good enough for you, especially all lengeried up and suffering from bum fluff!! hehe 🙂
Re(1): Elitism and cars in Bahrain
Alfa Romeo Spyder in silver… but I wouldn’t say no to a Porche. Or Cadillac CTS.
I’m not spoilt, just know what I want!

Elitism and cars in Bahrain
From the wayback machine
Beat up old Peugeout: Egyptians who drive no differently than they would in Cairo
Sadly Peugeout had since upgraded it’s products and no longer catered to this section of the market, but to the rescue came the LADA.
Ford: who MUST have an American car
Mazda Miata: British Expat who hasn’t quite yet figured out how to drive a larger vehicle (wait that’s the case worldwide)
Lincoln Towncar: Moderately successful businessmen who have yet to “arrive”. Or every fifth Kuwaiti (not in a Mercedes) or every third Qatari (not in a Land Cruiser; see below)
Land Cruisers: Wannabe Bedu who missed out on the last big-tired Nissan Patrol with the oversize jugs. Whadideyesay?
