The Bisht is the cloak you see some Arab men wearing from time to time. It’s purpose is largely ceremonial now and they vary in price from $100 to $1,000s depending on the cloth, its source, the gilding done on its edges etc. It’s a “must have” accessory if you want to show yourself as rich, or are visiting royalty, etc. Not wearing a bisht if you’re on those kind of errands is like you going to see the king in a track-suit.
Like anything in Arab culture, it is surrounded with myth, one of which I got to know today. Our illustrious MP Mohammed Khalid of the Salafi group is using his bisht to prove his sincerity! The story goes that in today’s Al-Wasat newspaper he has pawned his bisht with them with the instruction that if he changes his position on any issue in parliament, they can burn his bisht and return it back to him! Thus registering his absolute conviction that he will never go back on his word or declared position.
This was prompted apparently when he was faced by an Al-Wasat reporter who accused him of refusing to indict the Minister of Finance and National Economy Abdulla Said when his position was registered previously that he will indict Saif. His response is that the Minister is indictable for actions prior to the first session of parliament (which they are not allowed to look into by law) hence he didn’t “go back on his word.”
I’m not sure if this honourable dickhead is living still in the middle ages or in a desert culture, he certainly seems confused, and if this is his way of showing his sincerity, then God save us… once again, from this impotent parliament which is full of prima donas.

Hi this is Ali
Well today is a good day but i have just woke up so i am in a bad mood as usual. (People are in Avoid Mode) Ok so i check the blog and i see this idoit talking about burning his Bisht to prove his standpoint on issues. … not much of a statement here – but …
FWIW, I think this is such a pretty site. No clue what it says, but so nice to look at … http://alwasatnews.com.
I also smiled when I saw the link to the Clearance Rack on this site, http://www.desertstore.com/products-For-Sale/SA-men-01.html. Not sure why I’m surprised – every store has a discount section … why should the Desert Shop be any different! Commerce, we have lots in common after all …
Re: Al-Wasat
Al-Wasat newspaper has certainly had a big impact on journalism in Bahrain. It offered an “opposition” view to the normal rag-reporting we have had. Some of their reports are certainly skewed, but at least now we can read the semi-governmental Al-Ayam and Al-Wasat every day and choose to believe only what lies in the middle of their reporting!
Al-Wasat has also pioneered the creation of forums where they invite opponents to slug it out with good results gaining the right ears in government.
The others now (Akhbar Al-Khaleej and Al-Ayam) are playing catch-up after having had their pretty tame time for 20 years or more.
