Earlier today, SBS executive producer Mike Carey said Mr Martinkus’ captors had investigated his background on the internet and saw he was harmless.
“They Googled him, they checked him out on a popular search engine and got onto his own website or his publisher’s website and saw he was a writer and journalist,” Mr Carey told AAP.
“They had thought he was working for the Americans as an informer.”
John Martinkus, a freelance Australian journalist describes his Iraqi kidnappers as “not savages and would not kill indiscriminately.” He should know, they had him for 20 hours before releasing him when they were convinced by his entreaties and Google that he’s a-ok.
I don’t share Mr. Martinkus rosy picture of these criminals though. If anyone kidnaps any other person, regardless of motivation be that political, criminal or for personal gain, that kidnapper should be dealt with forthwith through the justice system.
I’m happy though that John Martinkus is back home with his family, safe and sound now.

Google saves lives too!
Traces of “Stockholm Syndrome” showing up in less than 24 hours. I am glad Mr. Martinkus is safe, but in my eyes if someone has the proven ability to kidnap someone, the ability to kill the same is not far off. Mr.Martinkus is lucky. Many have not shared his fate.
Google saves lives too!
Never mind Mr. Martinkus’ comments…so finally these terrorist dickheads have something to thank the West for! In not, who knows how quickly an airstrike might be dropping in directly on their heads?? Yes, it’s true people…for all its’ filth and pornography, THE INTERNET ACTUALLY SAVES LIVES!!!
(Hey, hey, Mahmood…don’t you go tracking down all that filth and pornography, now…LOL!!!) 🙂
P.S. Go RED SOX!!!
Re: Google saves lives too!
Not so much porn and other (good)stuff, but I tell you something that you probably didn’t know:
The internet speed is FANTASTIC during the daytime in Ramadhan! The throughput is quite okay too, so I do look forward to Ramadhan every year as normally (a) there isn’t much work to do anyway, and (b) I can download and view independent movies online at atomfilms.com to my heart’s content!
It’s not the same for nights though, as I suspect that’s when all the surfers and pornjunkies come out of the woodwork as they think it’s ok for them as they have broken their fast! The net then becomes rediculously slow!
Unfortunately this year Ramadhan so far has been very busy, and it looks like it’s going to continue like this till the end of the year. This doesn’t actually translate to projects and money mind you, just busy wheel-skidding doing involved quotations and stuff like that, so I miss my atomfilms this year!
