The server has a problem, or rather the Ethernet card on it has a problem, so the performance is lackluster at best. I have asked for the card to be replaced and they will do that as soon as possible.
We should be back to continuous ops tomorrow morning. bear with us please, thanks.
update: this is supposedly fixed now. please do let me know if you experience anything untwoards (on the site that is!). 😉

I always get that wrong! untowards just (to my Arab ear) sounds more correct!
