A SUMMIT to discuss possible changes to Bahrain’s national constitution is being lined up by the four political societies that boycotted parliamentary elections in 2002.
They want to modify disputed articles within the constitution before agreeing to participate in elections next year.
The summit, which is being planned for the middle of next month, is said to be a direct response to the government’s silence after talks with opposition societies stopped last October.
“We came up with recommendations after the government opened a dialogue with us,” said National Democratic Action Society (NDAS) board member Ebrahim Alsayed.
“That dialogue abruptly ended in October after we submitted our proposal and the government did not respond.
“The conference is in response to the government not being able to engage in a serious discussion with the opposition.”
Four political societies – the NDAS, Al Wefaq National Islamic Society, Islamic Action Society and National Democratic Society – boycotted parliamentary elections in 2002.
