He broke his hip this time..

My dad is an obstinate man, he’s lost his sight about 13 years ago, but still refuses to use any of the walking sticks we got him. The last couple of years he developed heart problems, but to him, he still thinks of himself as a young(ish) man (he’s 66) and subconsciously he probably thinks that the sight thing and general health will come back to him one day, and his disabilities are just a temporary thing…

That optimism is admirable, he carries on with his life, and he still produces remarkable and very insightful pieaces of art. I’ll share that with you some time when I get the chance to create a special website celebrating this artistic achievements. But that optimism has got to be tied to reality so that his quality of life gets better… which I think he is finally beginning to realise.

Due to some Cobalt radiation he had for another complication 15 years ago, and his heart condition, his electrolytes are shot to hell and back. A doctor he visited a few days ago prescribed something to him to allow his kidneys to rest a little so he can get a better night sleep; he’s up to the toilet about 15 times a night! BUT, even though that mum described his full condition to the doctor, his prescription actually played rather severely with his sodium levels as it reduced it to way below the minimums…

Trying to get up to go to the toilet 3 nights ago, he passed out and collapsed rather heavily on the floor… breaking his hip

He’s in hospital now receiving good care from a very good orthopedic surgeon who is a friend of mine. He transferred him to his ward and was scheduled to operate on him this evening, however as dad’s blood pressure was dangerously low and considering his various ailments and history, he and the anesthetist decided to postpone the operation for a couple of days while they keep him under constant scrutiny.

So forgive me for not being so active here over the next week of so, I’ll try to pop in from time to time, but I’m sure you agree with me that being beside my dad at this time is where I’m needed most.

I’m terribly sorry to hear that, Mahmood, especially since your Father is so young compared to many in his state. I wish him all the best, and may whatever may grant him relief from his suffering, do so with great haste!

I’ve been browsing through the album of your dad’s artwork that you’ve linked to, and wow, there’s some great stuff. It must have been quite inspiring being raised by him. By the way, what medium did he use for them?

Anyways, thoughts and prayers are with him.

    He’s okay now

Thank you all for your well wishes and prayers. My dad had a procedure to insert two screws into his hip to get it re-attached. He’s still out and in ICU for observation, but the doctors assured us that all went well and are happy with his condition. He should start walking again in the next couple of days and released soon thereafter.

Our immense thanks and appreciate go to the medical team that took care of him, ably led by Dr. Bashar Al-Sayed, Dr. Al-Hussaini Dr. Hussain Darwish, Dr. Jalal and the excellent nurses assigned to his ward. May God bless you and them all.

    He’s at home

Finally. He’s released from hospital and his doctors are happy with his recovery. He’s back home now resuming his bitching, moaning and chimney smoking…. ie, back to normal! Now we can go back to our normal lives until the next disaster strikes! 🙂

I’m truely sorry to hear that Mahmood, I hope your dad recovers in no time!

It’s sad to know how some doctors in Bahrain tend to give out prescriptions exactly the same way they would solve puzzles. The medical liability law in Bahrain needs a major reform that’s for sure…

Anyway, plz tell him a girl called Nora says salamat wo matchoof shar, and inshalla u get well sooooon 🙂

    Man of Steel

    man of steel

Dad’s first op, inserting 2 screws to fix his broken hip didn’t work so he was back under the knife this afternoon to sever the joint and replace it with what you see here.

We’re joking with him now telling him that in the replacement hip they also inserted a battery and remote receiver so he can be programmed to break-dance by remote control!

    He’s doing fine now though.

  22. mahmood

    he’s in again

I’m afraid the first op didn’t do it, he’s back in hospital today for another op at lunchtime, this time they’re severing the bone and doing a complete hip replacement, steel rod and ball.

I’ll be away off and on again I’m afraid.
