Want to know what I got up to in Dubai? Have a looksee!
I should mention I guess that the WHOLE movie was shot through my Nokia 6630 phonecam. When you select “long” in the video settings, you can store up to ONE WHOLE HOUR of video on the phone’s memory! This was then edited on Avid Xpress Pro on the Mac, exported as Quicktime reference movie, opened that up in Quicktime Pro and resaved at this size and compressed with MPEG4.
I know that I titled it vlog #3, but it actually is #4. It was too late last night, sorry.

So now the “moving sidewalk” is not good enough for you? I’m starting to wonder if Bonsaimark’s stories about the escalator in your home aren’t entirely make-believe….
Mahmood, my mother will be very disappointed in you. She never fails to point out to anyone that the gold sold in Bahrain is better than what you get in Dubai. She’s always harping about how they enforce the standards more regularly.
I doubt that impure gold would make it out onto the Dubai Duty Free floor, but for my poor mother’s sake I have to register my protest that you’ve pimped Dubai gold with no mention of Bahrain’s. (Perhaps you can make it up to her with a vlog of the Manama Gold Souk?)
And that was a beautiful carpet. AED42,000 would come out to a shade under $11,000 US. But, remember that is pre-haggle and out the door. A very similar piece would easily run you $15-$20,000 at any of the few dozen Persian-American rug sellers in the US, minimal haggling, taxes, add-ons, financing and all the small print to follow.

Re: Dubai vlogging
Your mother is right! Bahraini Gold from 18 to 24 carat is regulated and franked with the Ministry of Commerce’s seal of authenticity. If you’re caught mislabeling or flogging a 21 carat for 24, you’re shut down.
That carpet… man I was kicking myself for not having a “proper” video camera because the colours were awesome. Double awesome. I don’t know much about carpets, but if I were to buy something like that, I would hang it on the wall rather than walk on it. Its feel too was a pleasure.
For the record I don’t mind walking the distance from arrivals to passports even though it would take 5 – 10 minutes depending on speed, but if the garry is there waiting for passengers and its for free, why should I refuse to take my weight off my pins? Gave me the chance to continue to video too!

Hey Mahmood, my wife loves Wagamama and made me go there about once a week when were in Glasgow last year… but Noodle House in Emirates Towers and Madinat Jumeira is a similar kind of setup with much better food. It’s open a few years so I guess you might have tried it already. If not, check it out next time you’re in Dubai.
And I agree with DIB, Bahraini gold has a much better reputation than Dubai gold. Although Oman isn’t a tourist destination, regulations here are even stricter than Bahrain and purity is supposedly even better. But because the biggest buyers of gold here are Indians the design tend to cater more to them than the locals. That’s why Omanis who have Bahraini connections (like my family) tend to buy from Bahrain- or more likely these days, Lebanon.

Ah…….. the joys of being a “foodie” – ignore the “bling-bling” in the duty free and enthuse about the noodles – you have your priorities right Mahmood – damn if I don’t feel peckish after looking at your vlog – and I have just this second come back from eating way too much in the canteen………..
