I’ve got tunnel vision at the moment, I have no idea what the hell is going on and I can’t see much and there is absolutely nothing wrong with me as far as I can tell… maybe I need to physically remove myself from the computer and go do some night-time gardening which is a nice idea! I’ll get out once the sprinklers have come and gone.
Anyway, Bahraini Rants once again has a nice idea (where the hell does this guy gets them from?!) in that he’ll post three words mid-week every week and it is YOUR job to use them in a conversation!
Brilliant.
I’ve been a subscriber to dictionary.com’s word-a-day email since April 2002 and have received so far 1,286 words from them which increased my English vocabulary quite appreciably, I only wish that there was the same service available for the Arabic language. Or at least let’s have a single good and free Arabic dictionary on the internet, rather than having to go through hoops or go out and buy physical dictionaries to find out what an Arabic word means. I wish too that the same people who own these dictionaries start the same service to help increase our Arabic vocabulary.

If one is interested in increasing one’s vocabulary, among other things, I would recommend taking a gander at http://ashtaria.blogspot.com. I have not had to use a dictionary as frequently as I do reading her blog since my first year of law school, nearly 20 years ago. But, don’t read it like a dictionary, start at the beginning. 🙂

Night time gardening…. sigh, Ya akhi one honestly doesn’t appreciate what he’s got until he’s deprived of it, I’d have to wear 4 layers to try such a feat these days. In the other hand the 3 nights of consecutive frost have definitely killed of the slugs! btw have you ever tried planting heathers?? I’d imagine the acidic soil in the khaleej would suit them a treat.
As to the vocab building exercise the reader’s digest’s “It Pays to Enrich Your Word Power” feature is a gem, the way it explains the etymology and puts the words in context is a great mnemonic aid (the magazine itself is a tad bit too republican for my taste but my dad’s been buying it religiously ever since he went off to college in the states 40 odd years ago, the result-we’ve got boxes of them!)Apparently it used to be published in Arabic but stopped with the onset of the Lebanese civil war. It would be interesting to see their approach to the vocab section in Arabic.
The only semi-decent Arabic dictionary I’ve come across is “Lisan el ‘Arab” : The Arab Tongue. The fact that it’s around 20 -albeit thin volumes- doesn’t quite place it in the “pocket-sized” category, and it’s quite archaic in some parts. I managed to find a site that sells versions on a CD which is sort of daft -10$ cost + 7$ bank surcharge: http://www.almaktabah.com/ByBookID.asp?BookID=13936
It tells you something about how far we’ve go to go in the field of marketing!

Re: Vocabulary
thanks for your concern, I think it was a transitory thing as I have been fine since the day I posted that article.
