Happy National Day!

34

What we need to concentrate on to have an even happier 35th National Day are too many to list probably, the most important to me, in no particular order, are:

  • Separate religion from politics
  • Get a decent press law, Ibrahim Bashmi’s suggestion and repealing Law 47 (arabic) are good starts
  • Protect personal freedoms and educate people what they actually are
  • Protect the freedoms of speech and assembly
  • Let’s hasten the parliamentary elections, I know that we have some 300 days to go, but can we please get a discount?
  • Get a Truth and Reconciliation committee going and let’s go past the past and repeal Law 56
  • Work on the economy, we’re dying here.
  • Share the wealth of the country more evenly
  • Criminalise racism, discrimination and sectarianism
  • Wipe out corruption in all of its forms
  • Codify Family/Personal Status law
  • Justice. Our judicial system is a joke.
  • Work on credibility, Bahrain has lost it, we need to work together to regain it.
  • Trust. This is completely shattered between the people and the rulers or as close as can be. This need to be fixed.
  • Once these things come to be, I think you won’t have to chase people with a stick to get them to be patriotic, they will automatically become the most patriotic people the world will ever know.

Congrats on your 34th Bahrain, may you live for ever.

I think other important points would be to stop blocking pornographic sites and implement laws that give permission for there to be strip clubs and escort services.. Only then, would we ALL have a better country!

      I love you Bahrain!

      Sincerely,

      Happy National Day!

Present happenings over last few weeks remind me of something I read recently, Milton Glaser once said DISSENT PROTECTS DEMOCRACY, something the lawkeepers everywhere should remember.

      Happy National Day to all.

      Amen, Mahmood!

This ‘manifesto’ will certainly get you my vote!

I just finished reading the royal address. It is a real disappoinment. Coud not he employ you as speechwriter? ( Can you volunteer for the job?)

Just to let you guys know that the real national day is the 15 of december and not the 16.
Al Khalifa changed that to the 16 the day Shaikh Issa bin salman got his bloody chair.
      Happy days people.

      Happy National Day!

That manifesto is exactly what needs to be done – new press law, Decree 56/T&R Commission/separate religion and politics should be the priorities. With the exception of the last its not a lot and just requires some imagination and courage.

The influence of religious extremism isn’t one that Bahrain can solve soon or on its own and the big problem is that the more democratic the country becomes the worse it’ll get. But this is the conundrum that the entire Arab world faces. Sigh.

      Re: Happy National Day!

Yeah I was wondering about that too… Bahrain has only existed for 34 years or what?

ذكرى جلوس الملك على عرش المملكة منذ ثلاث سنوات

By the definition of National day as the accession day of that Hamad bin Issa Alkhalifa came to power then its 7 years old right? or is it 3 cos thats when he became King?

Yaaaay Bahrain is 3 years old… it behaves like it most of the time anyway.

Happy National Day, you’re not too old Bahrain ;). Hopefully this will signal a better year to come.

      Re(1): Happy National Day!

You’re both being very childish and need to grow up.

Independence Day is August 15th, 1971 < -- notice it says "independence" not "national" National Day is CHOSEN as December 16th of every year, notice it says NATIONAL day, not accession. Accession Day is CHOSEN as December 17th of every year. Three very important dates and very different occasions. You might want to think a little bit more about them rather than going to the usual track of down with Al-Khalifa rubbish. National Day to me is a day for the nation, the whole nation, to feel good about itself, and to use it as a benchmark to bring the whole nation together. Where does it say in any definition of National Day that it is exclusively for the ruling family? If it had, it would have been called "Royal Day". Relax, feel happy for your nation and revel in the good it has done. Sure we have a lot of problems that must be resolved, and yes both the government and the opposition are working in their own ways to resolve them, but don't get your "facts" muddled up and pretend to be a 'revolutionary' but getting every single occasion and turning it into what it is not. It is NATIONAL DAY, enjoy it and revel in the fact that you ARE Bahraini, this day is for the whole of Bahrain regardless of ALL the political crap that is going around. And yes, National Days are chosen by the ruler, committee, public, whomsoever as a calendar date to get the nation to celebrate and be at one with each other. Independence day is set in history, that cannot change, fine, you want another holiday in our already crowded holiday calendar? Declare Aug 15th a national holiday and call it Independence Day. Would you feel happier with Aug 15th than Dec 16th? Accession day is a date chosen by a monarch to celebrate his/her accession to the throne, it doesn't have to be absolutely the day in history that event actually happened. Thought has gone into the date chosen, much like the Queen of England's birthday is different than the one actually celebrated. Guys, get over your differences with everyone just for once and enjoy what you have!

Thanks for laying the smackdown on this topic. It is getting very tiring reading the bash the Al-Khalifa familiy entries by a select few “Malikian” type posters on this blog. No matter what happens with these people it is blame the Al-Khalifa familiy. Most of them need to take a good long look in the mirror and take the advice of JFK and ask not what the country can do for themselves but what THEY can do for the country.

      Happy National Day!

Just how exactly do you wish to remove religion from politics Mahmood? Isnt Islam a political religion? The sharia?

I think before you remove Islam from the state, it would seem you have to remove the State from Islam!

And the result would not be Islam…

      Happy National Day!

If the Muslim/Arab world wants to survive, compete and thrive in the world than Islam MUST be removed for the political process. Failure to do so will result in the same smelly stagnant puddle of sand the region lies in now. So do you want more of the same i.e NOTHING or would you like to see the region live up to its POTENTIAL and become a global player. A player known for something else besides creating problems that the rest of the world gets to clean up?

What advances has the Arab world made or what has the Arab world done in the past 400 years to benefit its own people or to better the world? The list sadly is a short one. I submit the one of the biggest reasons for this is the mixing of religion into the “politcal” process. What is your solution Ibn? Move forward or stand still?

      Happy National Day!
Religion is NOT our problem.
Your right it isn’t. It is EVERYONES else’s problem right? When a person can’t get to the hospital in Manama because some Turban in a mosque has incited a riot from his Mosque RELIGION is a problem. The abuse of religion. When a person can’t operate his legal business in a profitable manner because some BEARD claims it’s is against the Koran that is a religious problem. What is your solution BESDIES following ISLAM in the correct manner. Newsflash. THAT ISN’T going to happen any time soon in any kind of manner to make a sizable differance.
In Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)’s days, Muslim nations were the most successful and prosperous, while religion ruled their life.
Your dreaming of past days of glory. How many years ago was that? 1400? 1500? What has happened since then? Why has the Arab world remained stagnent?
Our problem is the misunderstanding of Islam’s teachings, and arguing alot about things that aren’t that important.
Perhaps. Still if you seperate religion from politics you don’t have this issue to deal with concerning politics.
What we need to do is follow Islam in the RIGHT way.
So are you saying the religion hasn’t been followed right since the Prophets day’s when things were the” most successful and prosperous”? (your own words) A fatal sounding premise I think.
By excluding religion from our political calculations is to deny our Arab and Muslim personality. I think we should care more about knowing our religion and how to follow it’s teachings productively
Arab and Muslim personality? Sounds like some guy from Egypt named Nassar a few years ago. Care for your religion all you want. That is a good thing. Just keep your religious views in check with the daily operation of society and the world. Beards and Turbans calling for unrest doesn’t sound like a very good religious thing to do. Yet it happens and is allowed to go on. WHY? Seperate the WHEAT from the CHAFF and watch the desert BLOOM!

Religion is NOT our problem. In Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)’s days, Muslim nations were the most successful and prosperous, while religion ruled their life. Our problem is the misunderstanding of Islam’s teachings, and arguing alot about things that aren’t that important. What we need to do is follow Islam in the RIGHT way. I think we should care more about knowing our religion and how to follow it’s teachings productively.

      Happy National Day!

And now for my actual post:

      Hello, I am Ibn.
Religion is NOT our problem. In Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)’s days, Muslim nations were the most successful and prosperous, while religion ruled their life. Our problem is the misunderstanding of Islam’s teachings, and arguing alot about things that aren’t that important.
Partly true – two mullahs argueing over why a male should not sleep in a bunk bed over a female in a train travelling 50mph because should the train crash the male might fall on the female thereby impregnating her, is of no use. And yes, this conversation ACTUALLY HAPPENED on one of Iran’s state (did I say STATE?) owned television.

      But here’s the real kicker:
What we need to do is follow Islam in the RIGHT way.
LOL! Really?! Ladies and gentlemen, I nominate THIS above quote as “Quote of the millenium”! Hahahahaha!!

Ooohhhh…my friend! If ONLY everyone followed their religion “the correct way”. Ahh, how much easier life would be….the crusades would have never hapened, 9-11 would be in the fiction section of bookstores, and catholic priests wouldnt be boning 13 year old boys….ahh, how wonderfull…

You see my friend, what you and others need to realise, is that you are a human, BEFORE you are a muslim. THAT is the key – and guess what hapens to humans when they are given unchecked power? Thats right! You guessed it – they abuse it! Ta da! Human nature 101!

      Human –> Muslim

      and NOT:

      Muslim –> Human

      Nuh uh.

Historically speaking my friend, Europe spent a good 1000 years trying to “follow religion the right way”. And where did it get them in this time? Nowhere! Now if you already know this, why would you not spare our people the same heartache?

If The separation of religion and state was a person, he would say this:
“While you research your ‘right way of religion

      Re: Happy National Day!

You’re confusing a lot of concepts together if your zealousness me thinks. Calm down and remove the coffee infusion for a little bit! If people go out on the street to demonstrate they have every right to, as they are expressing their opinion. I doubt very much that these people would not make way quite promptly for an ambulance to go through. As to damage to business, I think this is over-rated, if it is a peaceful demonstration then no business would be affected, when it turns into a riot it’s a different thing altogether, and as far as I know the vast majority of demonstrations in Bahrain were peaceful.

As a businessman I would be drawn to a country to invest in if I knew that people can peacefully demonstrate rather than bottle everything up only to blow up in a major way at a time in the future.

      Re(1): Happy National Day!

      Mahmood

I could not get to AMH last month when some unemployment “unrest” was going on. The streets had been blocked and tear gas was wafting in the air. The streets had been blocked by roving bands of protesting humans and Public Security forces. Yes that is plural STREETS had been blocked. That area of Manama was sealed off ,no one in and no one out. Sad and scary.

People have a right to demonsrate but not a right to disrupt I think.

      Happy National Day!

Hey! Mr. “Anonymous on December 20, 2005 01:03 PM ”

This is Ibn….and I do not know why you have worded your response to me the way you have….I am PRO separation of religion and state – I wasnt arguing otherwise – I was making the point though, that before they remove religion from state, they would do well to remove the state from religion.

      So you’re on my side!
      Jeez.
