Happy Friday to you my friends…

Amaryllis, originally uploaded by malyousif.

The weather outside is glorious: sunny, slight breeze, about 15/16 degrees C and I’m just back from pottering around in the garden.

This is my third amaryllis to have bloomed, with the fourth just beyond looking that it will too, soon enough. This is the first “dwarf” amaryllis, but it’s head is huge. Must be about 6 or 7 inches across.

Gorgeous.

Happy Friday to you my friends…

Ahh Mahmood, the rewards of the use of the ground sword…

The Orientals have enchanting sand garden effects that would marry well with Bahrain weather conditions and
desert life wonders crossed with the art of the Orchid appreciating tastes of Mahmood,

Where I come from the climate permits the addition of moss like growth to balance effects in the garden. The hardiest moss can adapt to dry climate or very harsh arctic conditions, displaying natural wonder.

This bloom you have is cool.

    “The Warrior” my Grandfather and I spent much time in the desert around Yuma Arizona and in the Imperial Dam area of California. He was fond of pointing out these little trees that stood in the barren dessert not growing much taller than a couple of feet and looking like an inconsequential bush;

BUT he explained they have a root system that can be as of large a mass as a Mighty Oak tree, but growing to the water below and in the protection of the ground. Some of these little bushes are more than a thousand years old.

    Mahmood,

Do you really have to run it in and describe how the day was all sunny and glorious, etc..

Well, it is a sunny day in Canada too .. I am not commenting on the temperature though because I am in no mood to go out and check it.. Nah.. I am too lazy to switch on the TV..

    Happy Friday to you too!

    Silly me

The amaryllis doesn’t look real. Very beautiful, an artist can use that flower as his/her subject.

Happy Friday to you my friends…

The weather was perfect. We on the other side of the causeway went picnicing in the desert! The pesky flies didn’t even find us until after we ate. One wierd thing, we really were in the middle of nowhere, when much to our suprise, a beautifully marked pidgeon walked, yes WALKED up to us and stared. Where did it come from? It hung around us for an hour like a lost puppy. It had 3 marking bands on it’s legs, so surely it was someones pet. But again, how did it get miles out in the desert? We gave it some water on a paper plate. It drank some, then walked back out into the desert. Do hobbiests keep/train pidgeons in this part of the world? Falcons I know about, but this is a mysterey.

BTW, that amaryllis is outstanding, is it too late to plant the bulbs here? I hope not.

Funny pigeon, did it taste good?

No idea if Amaryllis bulbs could still be planted at the moment, unless they have been in the fridge for a month already; if so, then they should be planted and would flower in the next 4 weeks before it starts getting hot. I’ve got 3 Amaryllis in the ground since last year and they seem to be dormant, waiting for something, as all they’ve grown is leaf with no stalk coming out yet. I don’t think they will ever flower this season. My plan however is to remove them from the planter and put them in the fridge for a month and then just pot them for indoors. Maybe that way they will be fooled!

I heard that you have fantastic garden centres in Khobar, if so, can you let me know which one is the best and maybe an address and telephone number (ok if you really really could, GPS coordinates would be helpful for the car nav system!! ;)) for me to go visit some time soon?

I know that the selection of plants available in Saudi are tens of times better than is available in Bahrain. I know too that most, if not all, garden centres in Bahrain import their seasonals from Saudi.

    Salaam
Your amaryllis looks specially nice to someone who spent part of the weekend ploughing 30 centimeter high snow, a in a -minus 10 weather. (It felt 50 cm high and minus 20 ).

Thanks for your clourful testimony that there is life out there!

Mamood, that is a magnificent specimen, glad to see one of our South African plants doing so well in the desert sands.

    Oh thank you very much!

Do you know the actual scientific name for this variety?
