I hate Saturdays…

I can’t emphasise that enough!

We work 5 and a half day week, so we only take Thursday afternoon and the full Friday off; that is not enough any more. By the time Saturday rolls up I barely push myself to get to the office and actually do some work. Bleeagth..

Got to get the gear on I guess and do something useful… like getting out of here and go do some honest manual work in the garden for the rest of this afternoon! Maybe…

Mahmood – it is HOT … drink lots of fluids…. and have fun! 🙂 We get Thurs and Fri’s off, but Sat. does roll around pretty darn fast. I used to love Fridays, now it’s my least fav day of the week. 😉

  2. CerebralWaste

Wouldn’t your life and business be easier if your weekend was more in tune with the Sat/Sun weekend in the West? Doing any kind of business with the Mid East in either direction is complicated enough just with the time difference let alone the work week disparity I think.

  3. mahmood

Ahhhh, Tooners I’m having some fluids now, just after coming back from the garden where I fitted the last 3 of a total of 5 trellises on the North facing wall for the Passion Flower to spread as much as it wants to! It was pretty crowded on the orgininal 2 trellises, now it has a total of 6!

And I scrubbed the bird bath, that thing gets bloody disguting pretty quick! Now at least you can see that bottom.

CW, funny you should say that, we’re discussing this on the Arabic side and the consenses of 3 replies is a Friday/Saturday preference so far.

  4. meddo

batelco, (ooops), made the switch just this year, and there’s a govt. plan on doing the same thing for the govt. sector by the end of this year or starting next year, would be quite preferable…

Actually, I just implemented Thursday/Friday off in the office. It has worked wonders. We used to work half-day Thursdays too. [Am waiting for the official Friday/Saturday weekend to be announced (if it ever does!).] Since then, office staff come in fresh, active, and ready-to-go Saturday morning, since the change!

    There is a reason behind a 2-day weekend. 🙂

  6. meddo

yea, the reason’s to catch a bit of sleep, something i’m currently lacking while on my desk right now.

Every other day, every other day,
Every other day of the week is fine, yeah
But whenever Saturday comes, but whenever Saturday comes
You can find me cryin’ all of the time

    Monday, Monday

where did you get your bird bath? i’ve looked all over for one. finally got one at anwar (i think that’s the name) but it’s metal and it’s already rusting. did you have to order it?

we have two flowering vines growing up some trellises in our front yard… they’re flowering. it’s pretty. they’re finally starting to spread. i think it’s time to add some different varieties tho.

all of our flowers have died since returning, so i think in the coming days it’ll be nice to buy some new and make the yard beautiful again. i still haven’t gone to the new place… will have to try it… maybe today! 🙂

  9. meddo

you don’t need a bird bath, a window AC’s box is enough, atleast when we had them at our place they used nest up in just about every one of them!

  10. tooners

bird baths are good for water or food. i gave a bird feeder to my in-laws but the birds don’t seem to know what to do w/ it… i’ve not tried bird seed in our bird bath. the water is what’s making ours rust. i’d prefer a stone/cement bird bath if they’re available here.

  11. cnm

mahmood…please start a campaign to get rid of our 5 and a half day week… !!!!! its too short to recover!..

I recently heard that the powers-that-be in the UAE have proclaimed that as of Sept 1, the weekend in the UAE will change to Friday/Saturday. Just like that !

I have also heard that this has already happened in Qatar. Is there any confirmation of this ? If both of these are true, just how long will it be before Bahrain follows suit ?

From the business point of view working with the rest of the world it makes better sense to be more in sync. How it will affect everyday businesses in the Kingdom we’ll just have to wait and see.

If the UAE can implement this almost overnight, adn Bahrain moved from driving on the right to driving on the left back in the 60’s, anything’s possible.

  13. MooDY

Tooners, nothing fancy, just a plant-pot dish! I find they are perfect as they are only 1-inch deep (get a larger one, say one foot) and fill half of it with water so it’s shallow enough for them to drink from, and jump in and bathe. And as it is made of glazed porcelain, it will never rust and the birds love it!

  15. tooners

did it take a while for the birds to find it? the ones around in our yard don’t seem to go to the bath we have currently. but, i did see one of these in my FIL’s yard this past friday and the birds were playing in it.

do you sit it on the ground?

    thanks! 🙂

  16. mahmood

Here are some pictures of it:

Sparrow in the bird bath :: Bird Bath :: Front/side garden

Yes it did take some time for them to feel safe enough to use it, a few weeks I think, now I can’t get them away from it! So much so that immediately I put the fountain I got from my sister, they used that one to drink from as well!

  17. tooners

how wonderful! what a sweet shot of the bird on the bath! i think i could sit for hours and watch it 🙂

beautiful petunias there in the 2nd photos! the grass looks great… we’re still working towards getting that plush feel and look. the gardener cut the grass, this last time, so low…. it looks terrible.

really nice pics tho! do you get butterflies?

  18. mahmood

Soon! I didn’t kill the caterpillars this time and allowed them to continue to chomp on my potted orange tree leaves.

The petunias are gone obviously, their season has finished. In their place I’ve got giant California zinneas, regular multi-colour zinneas, cockscombs, celosias, and two or three kinds of sun flowers. I’ll post pictures (obviously!) of them when they start to flower, which is not more than a couple of weeks I think.

Cutting the grass short once in the season is not that bad, as long as you are careful and fertilise it by spreading NPK granules (I use 10-10-10, NPK stands for Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium, which they sell in all garden stores, a handful a square meter will do – don’t over-do it, once every 6 weeks is more than enough normally) as that will encourage vigorous growth. Water the lawn well every day and you will soon be rewarded with a lush, green, lawn.

What are the labour laws like in Bahrain? Do you have anything like the 44 hr work week in Canada?

  20. Chris in Manitoba

I really hate to rub it in but, it’s Victoria Day long weekend here! Three and a half days off.

Also, the unofficial start of summer & the rule of thumb day for planting the garden. Usually no more frost warnings at night.

Well this year it didn’t work out so well. Frost killed all my tomatoes last night & may have destroyed the buds on many of the fruit/berry trees 🙁

I guess you really don’t run into these problems in your parts.

  21. mahmood

No, but we’ve got our fair share of disasters, from strong hot winds, dust storms, to extreme heat, all of which rob the plants and gardens from all the moisture they have that would wilt the plants in no time… other than the multifarious pests and bugs.

I guess that’s what makes it fun gardening here, things grow IN SPITE of all other conditions. That’s the reward.

  22. tooners

no frost (altho i wish), but the extreme temps in the summer tend to kill most of my plants! matter of fact, i had some lovelies (flowering plants) in the garden when we left for holiday but now many of them are gone. many died out cuz they were annuals, but even some of my perineals died. i keep having this luck w/ the plants… maybe one day i’ll be able to get in the groove… or acquire a green thumb like Mahmood! 🙂

i wonder where i can buy those??!

  23. mahmood

If you have passion for it, you will get there eventually. I do not regard myself as a “consummate gardener” by any means, I’ve got a long way to go yet, but I am fortunate enough to have a garden and my wanting to do something good with it myself rather than depending on others completely is what spurred me on with this fantastic hobby.

Let me also tell you that I have had my fair share of disasters, and I still do them! Drowning plants, over-medicining, killing off beneficial bugs, etc, were and are my companions!

I find that reading about the subject and particularly knowing the name of the plant and then researching it on the internet will help you plan for it as you will get to know its particular needs.

My success so far is heeding the advice of Elizabeth Shaheen! Get her two books, they sell them at Books Plus I think, as they have some valuable information about soil prep (which is the most important thing) and general, if brief, info on the plants of Bahrain.

I told her she’s got to start a website where she could disperse all that valuable information, and tried to convince her that having the site will actually increase the sales of the books rather than reduce them even with the information being made freely available on the net!

  24. tooners

you know… i faired pretty well in the states w/ plants, but not here. it tends to cause me to lose my drive for it on days… but.. i don’t want to give up.

i think having someone else do it may also be a problem for me. i love gardening… it’s just very frustrating not knowing what to do here… but i will get the books.

i have lots of books for plants in the states… but there is no comparison.

thanks! and have a fun trip to dubai.

    Bahrain, Friday-Saturday weekend
Bahrain plans to follow the UAE’s lead and adopt a Friday-Saturday weekend, reported Gulf News. Sheikh Mohammed bin Eisa Al Khalifa, the Chairman of Bahrain’s Economic Development Board, said that the move was vital for Bahrain’s economy to keep pace with other countries in the region. He proposed that the new weekend be implemented from the start of the new academic year in September.

    Hope this happens soon.

  26. Anon Counsel

Have we received confirmation that Bahrain will be adopting the Friday-Saturday weekend for Spetember yet?

Its almost August now. Does this change need to be passed by parliament for it to be effective? If so, hasn’t Parliament just finished their final sessions?

  27. Anon Counsel

    No chance then!!

Unless, the King/PM/Government passes an edict in the interim
