Lost & Disgusted

Lost & Disgusted

I have been thoroughly depressed over the last few weeks. Everywhere around me bad news persists; people dancing over dead bodies and urging for more killings, people whom I thought to be friends started to regard me as a mortal enemy, people throw about choice terms like “traitor” and “unpatriotic” with vitriol and not much thought. What I previously heard as hesitant questions, whispered normally, enquiring whether a person was from “us” or “them” are now loud shouts of “he’s shi’i” and “she’s sunni” with pointed rigid fingers, blood-soaked eyes and wide open saber lined mouths not caring for the future of this country or its people.

Reason, it appears, has disappeared. The benefit of the doubt has no place.

Will a dialogue ameliorate these feelings? Will it put the country back on a reconciliatory track? Will we ever think of an inclusive “us” rather than solidify an already created and maintained cantons of rage?

I don’t know any more.

I’m just a simple Bahraini who’s now lost, and thoroughly disgusted.

I had the privilege to be inducted into the Rotary Club by the District Governor Mr. Farid Gebran at the annual Gala Dinner on Dec 4th, 2007.

I am looking forward to contributing my time and efforts for the community and hope that I can be of benefit.

I would like to thank my good friend Hameed Karimi for introducing to the Rotary Club of Adliya and sponsoring me at the club. My thanks also go to all of my new family at the Rotary Club of Adliya and the Rotary fraternity in Bahrain.

On Al-Jazeera!

Posted on

I’ve been interviewed and filmed by Al-Jazeera’s Hashim Ahelbarra (the English channel) about a couple of weeks ago, the segment is airing in their news program throughout the day today Nov 8th, ’07. If you’re interested in watching, you can do so online (click here or click “watch now” on their front page).

Hope you like it.

update: If the schedule doesn’t change, it looks like they’re rebroadcasting it at around 25 past the hour every hour.

update 2: Al-Jazeera has just posted the interview on their website, and by the magic of YouTube, here it is too:

Pulling Teeth

Literally.

Pulling Teeth

I’m off in a few minutes to a “specialist” to pull two of my teeth. Molars. And that brings the total I have been made to part with to five.

I won’t bore you with the details, suffice it to say that one of those already had been root canalled and crowned. How the infection got to go under the tooth is anyone’s guess. Well, I’ll save you that trouble too and blame the bloody dentists (yes more than one) who played rugby in my mouth and only got the bloody crown to “fit” on the third attempt. And even then it wasn’t done properly. The tooth next to it – in sympathy I guess – developed a crater that is not worth re-fixing again.

The suggestion I got this morning was to go the implant route. I’m not very sure of that at the moment, but for tonight I just want the bloody things out.

Have a good evening.

It was a great pleasure meeting with one of the preeminent poets and writers in Bahrain – Mr. Qassim Haddad – this morning, chatting with him, exchanging ideas and sharing a table with him at the "Branding Bahrain" workshop.

This is the highlight of my whole year!

and how would I know this other than seeing them once in a while?

Batelco confirmed it in a lovely SMS to me at lunch!

Batelco SMS informing me that I shall return to the dark ages for two weeks until they reestablish my connection speed

Thus, our household is banished – thanks to Arif and Batelco – to the dark ages for another two weeks until the new billing cycle commences.

Nothings

I met a beautiful young lady this morning. She was running on the beach and our paths briefly crossed. I was sweating, she was shining. I stopped her:

“Hello, my name is Mahmood”
“Hi”
“I am 45. May I invite you to be my mid-life crisis?”

She laughed, briefly hugged me and ran off again.

She left the beach.

It was a very claustrophobic place without her being there.

Mahmood and the iPhone!

Mahmood and the iPhone!

Mahmood and the iPhone!, originally uploaded by malyousif.

Mahmood got his sticky mitts on the new Apple iPhone, Kris’ iPhone, which he only received yesterday direct from the States.

The phone functions of course does not work, we tried both MTC Vodafone and Fashelco‘s chips to no avail, but the function and the music and the movies and the WiFi and everything else is just, like, to die for (the last part done in Paris Hiltonesque voice please!)

UPDATE 25 Aug, ’07: The game is up, full SIM unlock achieved ->

It’s high noon, Apple and AT&T — we really hate to break it to you, but the jig is up. Last night the impossible was made possible: right in front of our very eyes we witnessed a full SIM unlock of our iPhone with a small piece of software. It’s all over, guys.

Fried MacBook

Posted on

This is not a very good day for me. Since I woke up things just conspired against me and me no likes it.

The latest is that my not-so-lovely MacBook just went belly up for no reason it seems. After struggling with it for the last 3 hours I hear the dreaded “click click” noise coming from the hard disk. The dealer (sorry Sofyan! pickup your phone!) doesn’t have a spare start-up Mac OS X DVD for me to try to start it up and run a Disk Repair. Now I’m off calling my friends to see if they can locate their original DVDs for MacBooks.. my brother (if he calls back) might come to the rescue.

So bloody frustrating… and of course I didn’t back up for a long time!!

Wish me luck. Until it gets fixed, I am comendeering my driver’s desk and computer to do my work (and blogging) on.

Damn!

andanotherthing: noticed that the engine in my car was misfiring, that is after it being in the garage for 2 weeks getting a major 40k service and bodyshop work, I notice it misfiring! They are replacing the ignition coils and I am stranded in the office without a car so I can’t even drive downtown to take the computer to the dealer to be looked at. Lovely isn’t it? 👿
