My father passed away this morning after a long illness. He leaves behind a family with rich memories of a good father, an excellent friend, and a world-class artist. Through him, his sons Mahmood, Jamal, Kamal and Hani, as well as his daughters Abeer and Maha, and his loving wife Badriya totally indebted to him for the vision, the tolerance and the humanity he inculcated in each and every one of us.

We shall remember you for ever my father. You were a giant.

Rest in peace now, for you have also suffered enough.

Good bye.

We are accepting condolences at the Ma’atem Al-Ihsa’iyeen in Manama until Sunday evening 18 June, 2006.

At the end of my suffering
    there was a door.

Hear me out: that which you call death
    I remember.

Overhead, noises, brances of pine shifting.
    Then nothing. The weak sun
    flickered over the dry surface.

    It is terrible to survive
    as consciousness
    buried in the dark earth.

Then it was over: that which you fear, being
    a soul and unable
to speak, ending abrubtly, the stiff earth
bending a little. And what I took to be
    birds darting in low shrubs.

    You who do not remember
    passage from the other world
I tell you I could speak again; whatever
    returns from oblivion returns
    to find a vvoice:

from the center of my life came
    a great fountain, deep blue
    shadows on azure sea water.

I am so sorry, Mahmood. I was devastated when my mom died; she was a big part of my world. There is so much of them in us, our memories from childhood to genuine affection as we grow up and they grow older.

Keep him close in your heart and mind and talk with your children often about him. It is obvious what a terrific man he was from the goodness in his son. My deepest condolences to you and your entire family.

    Mahmood,

    Please accept my warmest condolences..

God looked around his Garden and found an empty place.
He then looked down upon his earth and saw your loving face.
He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest.
His Garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best.

He knew that you were suffering, he knew you were in pain.
And knew that you would never get well on earth again.

He saw your path was difficult, he closed you tired eyes,
He whispered to you “Peace be Thine” and gave you wings to fly.

When we saw you sleeping so calm and free of pain,
We would not wish you back to earth to suffer once again.

You’ve left us precious memories, your love will be our guide,
You live on through your children, you’re always by our side.

It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you on the day God called you home

    Sincerely,

    Me again.

I, again, extend my sympathies. Not only did my father suffer an extended illness, he also suffered incessant pain due to chemotherapy. I can only speculate as to you and your father’s suffering.

It takes a lot of getting used to when one’s father passes away. Mine passed in 1995 and I still have a hard time reckoning with it.

I saved a picture of you father in my “People” folder. His image will stay there. You, and your family, are remarkable citizens of this planet.

Mahmood, I’m so very sorry for your loss. From the images you’ve painted here of your dad, my impression is that of a warm, independent family man who taught his children how to think, and who didn’t lose his art when he lost his sight. Thank you for helping me know him just a little bit.

    All my condolescence…. Mahmood…
When it happened to me I felf like in the following poetry….

    MESSAGE OF SOFTNESS
I dreamt I was walking by the sea-shore
    with the Lord.
I was reviewing on the screen of the sky
every day of my past life.

    And for each day
two footprints on the sand came into view:
    mine and the Lord’s one.

But sometimes I saw one footprint only,
    and it used to happen
on the most difficult days in my life,
the days of greater fair, pain, solitude…

    Then I started saying:
“Lord, I chose to live with you
and you promised to be with me forever.
Why did you leave me alone
    on the most difficult days?”

    And the Lord replied:
    “My son, you know that I love you;
    those days where you see
only one footprint on the sea-shore, are whenever
I was carrying you in my arms”

    Dear Mahmood,

My heartfelt best to you and your family for your great loss.

Freud once wrote, “The trauma of every man’s life is the death of his father.” But Dylan Thomas was much more defiant, and his love and pride in his father is reflected in his most famous poem:

“Do not go gentle into that good night,
    Old age should burn and rave at the close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”

    Bless all of you.

I never met him, however, befriending his 4 sons made me understand what a “rock” he was. To raise a well educated, well behaved and well respected family can only be done by a strong-willed idividual.

Thank you again for the great support you have provided and kind words you have expressed. Both have been received well by my family and I, we all thank you.

We said our good byes to our father yesterday afternoon and left his body and soul in the care of Allah’s gracious hands. We shall always remember him, and it will be painful for a very long time to come, that is how much we are all attached to him, and we never realised how much, unfortunately, until he has departed.

You will excuse me for a few more days until I am ready to re-engage again.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who paid their respects and provided us solace in person, by email, comment or telegram. We really appreciated all the support and we would not have pulled through this sad experience without all of your help.

    Do accept my sincere condolences
