They’re born and bred for the desert, not people’s homes and most definitely NOT to be kept as pets. Apart from their natural stink, they apparently are very horny buggers!
Pet camel kills Australian woman
A woman in Australia has been killed by her pet camel after the animal may have tried to have sex with her.
The woman was found dead at the family’s sheep and cattle ranch near the town of Mitchell in Queensland.
The woman had been given the camel as a 60th birthday present earlier this year because of her love of exotic pets.
The camel was just 10 months old but already weighed 152kg (336lbs) and had come close to suffocating the family’s pet goat on a number of occasions.
On Saturday, the woman apparently became the object of the male camel’s desire.
It knocked her to the ground, lay on top of her and displayed what the police delicately described as possible mating behaviour.
“I’d say it’s probably been playing, or it may be even a sexual sort of thing,” the Associated Press news agency quoted Queensland police Detective Senior Constable Craig Gregory as saying.
Young camels are not normally aggressive but can become more threatening if treated and raised as pets.

camels were only meant as food. and transport. why anyone would keep them as a pet is a mystery. they dont do much after all, just chew, all day.

I hate camels. They are ugly and are too high for kids to ride. Their meat is not worthy to eat. Now I read they are dangerous to women too. Thanks Heaven we do not see them roaming our towns anymore!
I can only hope the Australians would not get so angry now as to want to send their camels back to Arabia!

A few years ago, there was a guy found living in a New York City apartment with a ‘pet’ tiger. The neigbors’ kids would tell their parents what they’d seen, and of course, were not believed. Finally one of the adults caught sight of it and called the police. They had to tranquilize the cat and bring it out on a stretcher. It was a fairly large animal, judging by the TV pictures.
The tenant also kept a small alligator in the bathtub, and some other exotic and sundry animal pals.
I can just imagine the reaction of the cop who answered the phone .. . “Yes, madam, my neighbor’s a tiger too …”
AFAIK the Aussies have quite a large number of camels because of their outback. So one should think they know how to deal with them.
Anyway I have acquaintances in Ohio who own Llamas. They are much smaller than camels but not less dangerous when angry or in heat as they told me. They are kept for their wool (Alpaca) but handled with extreme care.
Why do people need exotic pets? We have a cat: I couldn’t think of a better pet. Nice, friendly, clean – you can’t tell that of a camel 😀

w/ respect to Iris, lots of ppl in the States have llamas on farms… all used for their wool.
and as far as putting the camel down… personally, the animal should be allowed to roam w/ it’s own kind. i hate to say it, but i never feel sorry for ppl when they’re killed by exotic animals. these aren’t pets… and when you try to treat them as such, things like this happen. maybe this will teach others a lesson… ! yeah, right.

I have to qualify what I said above. Yes I hate camels but I hate dogs more. These are really nasty creatures. They are dirty, noizy and they have the tendency to savage people. I would argue that more people are bitten by dogs in the world in a single year than those bitten by camales in a 100 years.

despite the fact here, camels can be the man best friend in the desert. I’ve read a lovely novel for Ebrahim Al-Koni called “Taber” (Gold) and it expressed the most amazing friendship could be between a man and his animal/camel. I think it’s a matter of the perfect animal for the perfect person in the perfect environment.

Well Mahmood the only war that I know of which was started over camels was over 1500 years ago. That one indeed lasted for 40 years so we were taught in school. I am not aware of any such other war since then.
As for dogs well I can assure you many wars get started every day over dogs here in Bahrain and elsewhere. I almost had one with one of my neighbours. Thanks heaven he left along with his savage beast before our little war got started.

Hear, hear! Whoever said dogs are man’s best friend is a huge liar who should get sued for spreading the biggest lie on this planet. Personally I’ve been chased thrice and I have a lovely scar because the neighbors enjoy letting their dogs roam around our gardens without training them how to be decent first. And once you startle a dog, your life is over. They will eat you inside out while you’re alive and brag about it to all their dog gangster friends. “I chewed on her elbows, too! LOL! omg you should’ve seen the look on her face!”

There are signs along the highways through Arizona warning of Camel Crossings. I’ve never seen them, but I’ve seen the signs. Camels are ornery, they spit at you, and they smell bad. WHY anyone wants one as a pet is beyond me. Besides, Alpaca and Llama are oh so much prettier.
I really don’t get exotic “pet” owners. Pets are domesticated animals, like dogs and cats. If your dog bites you, you either haven’t trained it, you’ve been abusing it, or you simply have a mean dog. I’ve een bitten a few times, but it’s all been my fault, not the dogs. The best dog we had was our Samoyed. Big, fluffy, and had to stay outside because inside he was miserably hot. As a child he would sit under the slide in our back garden and let my brothers and I slide onto his fluffy back.

By the way Mahmood, you actually corrected some facts, I always thought that camels mated backwards, i.e. the male would sort-of reversed into the female backwards. I guess I was wrong. the best pets to keep are digestive chocolate biscuits. they don’t cause too much of a fuss and can make a good snack if you’re hungry. anything living is too much of a fuss.
i actually owned a snake once; a friend snuck it in from thailand. sexy little thing. within a month or two it managed to grow from 40cm long to a good meter or so, and started getting to big to handle, so I gave her back to my friend and told him to sort her out. haven’t heard from him since. yeah; don’t get pets.

Well Mahmood you have all the facts before you now. Camels are less dangerous than dogs. Would you do the sensible thing now and discard your dogs for the more subtle camels?
Imagine the joy you would get when the neighbours flock to see you walking your camels around!

Dogs are the best pets, especially big dogs with loads of teef like knives, like my dog. I read AbdulKarim’s comments out to my dog and my dog said “Give me a moment to deconstruct this gentleman’s sad doggist prejudices. I’ll hazard that he has been unduly influenced by cats.”
Btw, Mahmood, camels are quite common in Australia. Ranchers in the outback often use them to get around on and, due to some camels escaping into the wild, there are now herds of feral camels in Australia too.

Well Ash I do not keep any pets at home and I hate cats too. They are all horrible creatures. However, we have few tiny gold fish. They overheard me say an Arab proverb that says “fatten your dog and it will bite you†and they all said a prayer “may Ash get bitten one day by his own fat dogâ€Â.
I mean you no harm of course, but if I were you I would dispose of the dog before it is too late. You have been warned!!
Abdulkarim – I’ve had dogs all my life and none has ever bitten me, nor made any attempt to. Neither have I ever owned a fat dog. It’s a pity that you harbour so much hatred for a species that causes considerably less harm in the world than does almighty humanity. But each to their own. Enjoy your little goldfish.

Yes you are right. Humans cause more damage to each other, to animals and to the environment than any other creature but what can we do about us?
As for dogs, well man’s man best friend is the cause of over 5m bites every year in the States alone. Surely dogs were to blame for some of these.
I wish you continued happiness with your dogs. As for me I am not taking any chances with them. I will never trust a dog!

Now come-on ,how can you say ´they are all horrible creatures !´ Anyone that doesn´t like animals probably isn´t so keen on kids too..they can be quite similar … messing up the place leaving bodily excretions in inappropriate places breaking (or chewing) prized posessions, by accident of course, but life would be pretty bland and lifeless without them. God bless the domestic cat and dog ( and goldfish for that matter) as they are all part of an amazing creation…We only have a rabbit….but what a rabbit !!!

We at least have one thing in common and that is love of rabbits. I would not have one at home though for I think it is cruel to cage animals. I think animals should roam free but then I can’t let a rabbit loose in my garden can I? Worse still, those always hungry stray cats would eat him?
When I was little I had rabbits eaten by cats and even had one eaten by a dog. Now you would think that is the reason for my hate. No. Think of it. How many a child was butchered by a seemingly peaceful and cuddly dog? How many birds are killed by cats every day?
I call upon all governmnets of the world to ban ownership of cats and dogs except for the blind, for sheep farmers and for the emergency services. I think our towns and villages would be cleaner and safer.
Incidently, I still love kids and I beleive drive more joy from them than I ever will from playing with a dog!

Ok for one, camels are great pets. They need to be raised properly just like any other animal. They need requirements just like a horse, cow any other type of animal, to be met. And often times a responsible* and experienced* owner. Actually, camels are very smart. Smarter then horses in some cases. So what if they aren’t cute? You should want an animal because you like them in general kot for looks.
For two, camels don’t always do that to humans. Just like humans, they can have the urge.
Now I know the woman’s death was ‘wrong’ and such. But ever think she might be of fault?
