Bahraini brand of social injustice

Last night I read an article by Rafik Abdulsalam in Al-Hayat’s website declaring that secularism is not democratic and is an alien concept to Islam.

Today I read in the Gulf Daily News a continuing story of how the justice system in Bahrain – particularly the Shari’ah courts continue to be unjust in forcing a woman to give up her two young daughters in a custody battle with her ex-husband. She (her lawyers, and the press as well) believes that she has been specifically victimized by the Shari’ah judges because she is a founding member of the Bahrain Human Rights Society and the Women’s Petition Committee which campaigns for women’s rights. Ms. Rabea and her colleagues have faced judges in the past and continue to do so in their effort to streamline the justice system as far as family law is concerned, unify rules governing both Sunna and Shi’a (the two main sects of Islam) in Bahrain, and preserve a woman’s rights.
