Walking…

For the past four weeks now Frances and I started walking, but we had no idea how far we have been walking! We just decided that as we were (1) fat, (2) out of shape, and (3) out of breath, that we should (again) start doing something about it.

All of our attempts in the past came to naught as we either just got bored, lazy or both. We have a membership in the Ritz Carlton Resort that we hardly used considering the fantastic facilities that they have: gym, saunas, Turkish baths, beach, pools, etc. we just continue to renew our membership every year and hardly go there.

Well this time, she decided to drag me out of the office almost every day to go walking along the beach. The beach side of the resort extends from a nice small marina on one end and an artificial island on the other, so we start walking, sometimes one circuit between the two, sometimes twice and last night three whole circuits! All of this while the kids are doing their own stuff either on the beach or one of the swimming pools.

We were bushed at the end of it! But this time, my legs didn’t give up on me. Normally within the first 500 meters my shins just seize up. Cramp galore that results in me having to sit down for a while until they ease then hopefully continue.

Last night – yes even in the heat and humidity – we did three full circuits and my legs behaved themselves.

As we were waiting for the kids to finish their showers, we both had the exact same thought: “how far did we walk?” We asked the receptionist who said that the distance between the marina and the island is slightly over two kilometers! So we walked 12kms last night and as we have been doing this for about 3 weeks now (once every couple of days) we covered quite a distance!

Frances’ mind still works in imperial measurements so she couldn’t place 12kms and had to get it converted to miles. That came to about 7.5 miles. You should have seen her face! She couldn’t believe that we walked that far!

Well, when we go there again tomorrow and my shins don’t lock up again, I will know that my legs are approximately conditioned at last. Maybe in a couple more weeks I could jog part of the way…

They’ve just said on the radio that the apparent temperature today is 53 Celsius and will fall to 35 Celsius tonight!
