According to our enlightened government:
You don’t say?! Murderers and rapists in prison? Wow what a revelation. And here is simple me thinking that only decent people go to jail! The above I think is a clear indication that the government is getting fed up and cannot break the impasse. They will go in there in force, beat the shit out of the inmates, and then say “well they’re criminals and deserve what they get”. Sure, I agree that they deserve to be in jail for the crimes they committed. But the purpose of jail is not just to throw people in there and forget about them for a few years. If that was the sole reason jails were built (and this is what the government wants us to think) then they might as well not have them in the first place. What they should think about is the rehabilitation of these inmates and attempt to make them good citizens again. Sure some will go back to crime, but does that mean that the government should just give up on them? Don’t they too have rights? What the prisoners are asking for is (1) humane treatment, (2) re-education, (3) retrials for some of them who think that they did not receive a fair trial. But that’s probably too much to ask. They’re criminals. Just let them rot. You’re in for it guys… just prepare yourselves for a good beating! Some of Bahrain’s worst criminals are behind the sit-in and hunger strike at Jaw jail, authorities said yesterday.
Their crimes include murder, rape, robbery and drug trafficking, according to an Interior Ministry statement. The prisoners were last night urged to end their protest, while a peaceful solution is still possible. Authorities do not want to be forced into action to end the occupation of part of the prison, said Interior Ministry Under-Secretary Lieutenant General Shaikh Daij bin Khalifa Al Khalifa. gdn

surprised… really surprised!
They (the police) haven’t gone in yet, which is highly surprising. I was expecting that they would go in like the proverbial bull in a china shop but they haven’t yet. The prisoners are still on strike but have aparently ended their hunger strike and discussions are going on between the government, parliamentarians, human rights organisations to end the impass peacefully.
This can only be a “good thing” and it also means that maybe, just maybe the “old ways” have gone away and everyone is behaving in a civilised fashion… pretty good.
