And another blog from Bahrain surfaces!

Here’s another one that I just came across, Chan’ad Bahraini (Chan’ad is one of my favourite fish by the way, some people might call it mackerel) is a blog by an “Asian” who lived all of his life in Bahrain and hopes to portray Bahrain from his Asian perspective. So now we have an American expat, and an Asian pseudo-expat sharing with you their experiences of these lovely islands!

I (a.k.a. Chan’ad Bahraini) am an “Asian” living in Bahrain. I have lived all of my life in Bahrain, except for my higher education which I completed in the United States. After reading other great Bahrain blogs like Mahmood, and more recently, Letter from Bahrain, I thought I would also take the opportunity to document and comment on life in Bahrain, from the view of an “Asian” expatriate.

Chan’ad Bahraini

Although with a blog name like that, and with a mastery of writing Arabic in English with the custom use of numbers (which I still cannot fathom) to me this person is most definitely Bahraini, might not carry the passport, but certainly carries the spirit!

I do hope that more Bahraini blogs start up, it’s an easy process… Good luck!

Yeah the URL thingy gets cut off, probably the best way to do it is [ url = http://someurl ] description [ / url ] obviously without the spaces.

    here’s the page

    Mahmood,

Is there anything we in the blogging and blog reading world can do for “The Policeman” should the (God Forbid,) worst happen? I am very concerned for him and his family at this point. No one should have to live where words are feared more than actions but sadly this is a fact of life in many places.

Well let’s not jump to conclusions yet, the gentleman in question is obviously very intelligent and gauges situations correctly. He just felt uncomfortable with the attention and he rightly chose caution. Let’s just wait and see when and if he resurfaces.

Although I did email him and got a reply, I did not (nor would I consider) ask for his personal details as I knew he must be using a nom de plume, for his own protection in that country, so I doubt very much he would be traced.

Apart from that, he’s quite high up in the hierarchy, so he is relatively safe, though not safe enough.

    Let’s just wait and see.

If indeed he does get into trouble, then the only thing that we can do is really prey for him, as nothing sways the Saudi authorities from exacting revenge, not even through the States offices. It will help little, but we can all write to our foreign ministries should it become known that he did indeed get into trouble and his identity becomes known.

    Fingers crossed.

I am not in full fledged PANIC mode yet. Just concerned. You are right not much if anything sways the Saudis from revenge on those that speak their minds. Exile if your lucky. Empty Quarter Helicopter toss or worse if your not.

My fingers are crossed and he is in our prayers. I do take comfort with your feelings that you doubt he would be traced.

If you decide to cross the border into the US and need any help VISA wise let me know.

    Ciao!

    We have lost Alhamedi 🙁

You will have to keep us abreast of the situation in Saudi until he returns…I hope!

Having lived in a restrictive society with secret police and the fear of
arrest, I can feel for him.

    Damn, that pisses me off.

This is what you get if you live under such a backward and totalitarian regime where logical thoughts and words are just not appreciated, on the contrary, to those people who dare they throw in prisons or out of helicopters in the desert.

I hope he stays safe. In Saudi, it is just not worth it to be a martyr for your thoughts.

    Catch of the day

    Hello, Mahmood…

I can never resist a Google challenge, especially when it has to do with species identification. As Chan’ad Bahraini seems to have no contact link, I will post my find here and hope he sees it next time he drops into the Den:

I suspect his namesake species is Scomberomorus brasiliensis or Serra Spanish Mackerel, as a Google search of “Bahrain mackerel” brings up several instances. Here’s a photo link:

    Scombridae (Mackerels, tunas, bonitos)

That link had an error. Let’s see if this one works:

    Re(1): Catch of the day

Excellent! Thanks for the help on chan’ad! I’ll post a link on my blog soon. I’m also gonna try going to the central market and taking my own photo of some chan’ad.

Mahmood, I dunno how you found out about my blog before I even got it up and running propoerly, but thanks for spreading the word!

Alhamedi posted on May 8/04! Just a brief sigh of relief from us all, but a welcome one nonetheless. Thankfully, the ‘thought police’ haven’t locked down his satirical humor. 🙂

Ah, she wanted to remain anonymous, that’s why I didn’t include a link to her blog until I receive a reply from her! But now that the cat’s out of the bag…

Re: And another blog from Bahrain surfaces!

sorry, not this one, I’ve already got the link up for the blog you mention, there is yet ANOTHER one which I feel the author wants to remain anonymous. I’ve sent her an email asking permission, so unless she agrees I won’t mention it.
