Flower House

flower house, originally uploaded by malyousif.

I’ve found someone else who is obsessed with flowers and gardening, but this guy (or gal) took it in a very nice way. Just look at the amount of pots and colours he’s got all over his house!

Wonderful job, really really nice, but you have to see it have to see it with your own eyes to believe it.

I’ll try to do an interview/vlog about this house if I can find who the owner is. I didn’t fancy knocking on their door at siesta time this afternoon. Maybe in the weekend.

(The address is Villa 967 Road 3017 Zinj 330. I’m not sure of the house number, it could either be 971, but you can’t miss it. I’ve put a link above for a location map if you want to visit.)

I drive past this house a lot. It seems to me that every season the whole lot is re-done! Obviosly a lot of time and effort has gone into this house! It always brightens up my day!

this house is in Um al hassan i think and it won an award some time back at the yearly garden fair organized by the bahrain garden club 😉

    –angelo 🙂

Speaking of garden fairs — there is another one happening in march this year, maybe you’d be interested in doing a vlog for the exhibition and the exhibitors? 😀 , vegetable/fruit — school category is always entertaining!~

Angelo put your glasses on, the article had both a link to a map and an actual address both of which say Zinj!

Good idea about the garden show vlog, I might do that.

    Dear Mahmood,

I’ve been out of Bahrain for almost four years and have been looking all this time for the name of the plants that encircle the roundabouts in bahrain. The short, bordering red or green foliage that makes a beautiful contrast to the grass there.

A gentleman working at a plant store near the big Jawad supermarket Budayya told me that it was called “red grass”. I don’t believe that this is the name, but since you have such an affinity with plants, I’m hoping that you can tell me what this stuff is called.

I love the your photos of Alexandrines parrots and of your wonderful garden. I’ve missed white-cheeked Bulbuls so much that I’ve tried to locate breeders here in England and can’t find any.

    Your web pages are wonderful.

    Thank you,

    Carmen

    That’s a beautiful house!

What’s with the TV antennae? Don’t you guys do satellite and cable TV?

    Curious,

😀 aren’t Zinj/Um Al Hassan sorta’ close to each other right? Or maybe I’m just bad at geography here… 🙂

    cheers,

    Re: Flower House

    We still have terrestrials!

Can you believe that? And no, although Bahrain is rather small, we do not have cable which would have cleared the skyline of most if not all of these antennae and sat dishes.

    Re(2): Flower House

Close, they even share a border, but they’re not the same.

Umm Al-HassaM was the seat of power in the 1200s (CE) when Al-Asfoors ruled Bahrain on behalf of the Persian or Ottoman empires, not sure which.

Isn’t dangerous pointing out people’s houses with addresses and GPS info?

    Re: Flower House

Why? Bahrain is still relatively safe, and as I understand it, this house is pretty famous in its own right. Everyone (except for me that is!) know it as “the flower house” and people come from all over Bahrain to see it every season.

    Re: Flower House

Carmen, you have sent me to three different garden centres, made me ask at least 6 people what that border plant is called and received 6 wrong answers. I have spent the best part of 4 hours looking at pictures on the internet and chasing threads to find out what this damn thing is, although I’ve got it all over my garden.

However, we have success! (I think)

The plant is Alternanthera, and the closest match I could find is Alternanthera ficoidea ‘Broadleaf Red’ – some pictures and more information on the NOS Alternanthera Page, and Martha Stewart Living describes it as

A vibrant ground cover for full sun, dwarf Joseph’s coat forms a spreading mound of tightly held small oval leaves mottled with green, brown, red, orange, and purple. In summer, this herb produces insignificant, tiny, white flowers in oval spikes that are often hidden by the foliage.

    Phew! Finally!

    Thanks for the treasure hunt.

    Flower House

I just came in late as usual…so little time, so much to read. All I can say is bravo to these people! It must cost them a real mint to maintain in this climate, but well worth the expense & effort. Thank you for the pic, Mahmood!

    Shukran, Mahmood.

Thank you very much! I miss my little paradise so much. I know it will take a long time for me to make my garden in the UK look a little like my garden there in Bahrain.
I had spent so much time looking for that little red plant everytime I visited a garden center.

I particularly loved the picture of your bouganvilla.

I love your page and the beautiful pictures you put on your website. Keep up the good work and please keep us informed about the beautiful Island.

Thank you again– I’ve been trying for years.
    Carmen.
