3-for-1, Saidi latest brainfart

Deputy Dawg, Bahraini MP Jassim Al-Saidi

Yep, our effervescent Deputy Dawg™ is encouraging his fellow MPs to get it on:

An Islamist lawmaker has urged his male peers to take four wives, three Bahraini women and one foreigner, in order to help address the issue of the high number of spinsters in the country.

I’m not sure if he’s also including the lone female MP into the sphere of his advice of course, probably not as with his low opinion of women I wouldn’t be too surprised. Foreign women of course do not get regarded at all by him, they simply do not exist but if they do, they are worth a lot less than locals.

What’s all this in aid of then? What’s the motive for his latest stinker?

Shaikh Jasem Al Saidi, an independent with strong ties to the Salafis in the lower house, said that Bahraini men should not hesitate to wed more than one wife for the sake of the nation.

“We do not want to have spinsters in the country and we do not want a rise in the divorce rate either. Taking more than one wife is the solution, and I advise that the members of the Council of Representatives should set the example,” he said.

But his remarks, uttered in a light tone, drew compassionate opposition from the other 38 men who sit in the 40-member council.

“Please, just speak for yourself,” the Islamist deputy was told by fellow member Hassan Al Dossari, while Latifa Al Gaood, the only woman in the lower council, preferred not to comment.

Al Saidi’s suggestion came after the council could not agree on the merits of extending health privileges to foreign women married to Bahrainis.
Habib Toumi :: Gulf News :: 5 April, ’07

Ah, he’s trying to save the country the money that would have been paid by foreign wives for availing of the local health services.

Thank you sir. Now go back to your cave. And take with you all of those morons who voted for you as well.

  5. Bahraini and proud

All i ca say is,,, Ha ha ha ha, is there any special offer like marry 3 and get the 4th for free or anything of that sort???

it has been almost 2 years i’m trying to get married and bring my wife to the country and this guy is actually asking us to marry 4 hehehehe……

well if he is paying for my wedding, travel tickets, my wife’s visa, my first born education till university i might consider the 2nd wife lol……

i don’t think bahraini girls are that stupid to accept a man with a too many wives, and plus i guess it’s a CRIME some how….

  6. Bernie

Since when have women been on the buy three and get one free or marry four and get a 30% discount. May I say this man looks and sounds like a Neanderthal.

  7. LuLu

Hahahaha. Well, I know this will sound wrong, but I’m almost glad he is in parliament.. Where else can I get my dose of daily entertainment

  8. Grace

    Lord have mercy!!!

Can you imagine how chaotic the entrance to Parliament will be in the next few weeks? with the who voted for the like of this MP? wanting a peace of the action?

Pardon Monsier MP, I am 29 and I ain’t married yet…. I’m politically religous or is that religously politicized?

Hmmm, I guess it depends on which MP I am trying to hook up with :kissing:

  9. Eyad the Great

actually, his idea is correct, by marring 4 and divorcing all of them at once you decrease the divorce rate, just fantastic, is if thats our main problem in Bahrain.

I think he needs to lay off pipe and pass some of what ever it is he was smoking when he cam eup with this brilliant Idea, I mean its not like we are having over population problems, so we marry 3 Bahraini women, get half a dozen of kids from each, and then, Import another woman, get another half of dozen of kids.

all these women and kids will have to live in a rented flat (if u still have some change that is), get really bad health care and an even worse education, and by the time they finally are ready to join to work force of this great nation, they can all try and fight to be employed on minimum wage, and live happily ever after and repeat the cycle of low IQ.

I commented on the issue in SoulSearch’s blog, copying it here.. Isn’t there a way to like share the comments on posts that discuss the same issue?

AlSa3idi is known to be a joker in the council, I still remember the comments of Khalil AlMarzooq of AlWifaq after their second session quoted by AlAyam for saying that AlSaidi is in fact “a funny guy..”

The comment you talk about was in fact nothing but a sarcastic reply to a ridiculous issue raised by Khalifa AlDharani commenting on the spread of spinsterity among Bahraini women.

His reply does sound very acceptable if you balance it out with the irrationality what AlDharani is raising.

Please don’t take me as a defender for AlSa3idi; I’m just calling things by their names.

More on the issue you raised here.

well, actually, AlDahrani was pointing out that the decision to treat foreign wives freely would be counted against them because they would be seen as encouraging marriage from foreign women, when they promised during the elections that they would support women (referring to local women). and he was right.

plus this decision is actually unconstitutional because it means (again) that women and men are treated differently. they should be moving away from that, not enlarging the divide.

on the other hand, saidi’s comments are simply insulting and would never occur to a decent man who doesnt have come from the middle ages. hardly surprising.

and i didn’t see “sarcasm” mentioned in any of the papers i read. it wasn’t being sarcastic, it was an attempt at being funny. and he wasn’t.

Yeah …What else can he do! I think he needs to go back in his cave and then come back on Tuesday for his next show.

It’s quite entertaining. Where in the world would you see guys like this.
    aaarghhhhhhh!

  14. Concerned Citizen X

Are we being told whom we can or can not marry? Is there a quota system that has to be filled?

    Lets see,
    a) rising unemployment,
    b) Land scarcity, (well there are a lot of land just too expensive for us)+ land that can not be talked about,
    c) Inadequate Public Education system,
    d) Corruption

There are so much more issues that the MPs’ can deal with which may actually help improve our miserable lives, yet they continue to waste time on petty things.

GET This into your heads (Freedom)
People are free to get married to whom ever they want, if they don’t get along later on, they are free to get divorced. They can then choose to find another mate, or people can just choose to live out their lives as spinsters or bachelor.

I SAY LETS NOT EVEN GIVE THIS GUY THE TIME OF DAY, IGNORE HIS, he might then appease us by crawling under a rock and staying there.

  15. Abu Arron

At least foreign wives are an option in Bahrain.

Does anyone remember a certain v v v highly placed Gulf neighbour who stated that national men should only marry national women to cut down on the number of spinsters – he then went off (within a few weeks) and got a foreign wife from a country beginning with L.

  16. captain Arab

News like this makes it to the funnies page of foreign newspapers, most probably with a nasty caption.

So what happens when all the guys have taken the 4 wives, and we still have an outstanding balance of unfortunate spinsters???

Normally an MP reflects the people that voted him in… I really hate to think that we have a population out there who have got received a raw deal through the McDonalds drive through..

We have more important issues to deal with Mr. MP

  17. Abu Arron

“raw deal through the McDonalds drive through..”

Ha, ha. Do you want fries with that spinster?! Sorry, not funny really.

  18. Abu Arron

No thanks, don’t make it a large one.

Right, that’s enough!! Stop here before we get told off.

  19. Barry

I never understood WHY anyone would want more than one wife? HOW is polygamy even attractive? Is it prestige? The chance to switch up your sex life? Really, you should just get a bunch of girlfriends if that’s the case. Maybe it’s free maid service? I mean seriously, one wife and kids is enough, but 4? Jeeze.

  20. can we talk

Nagging in mono is bad enough, but quadrophonic!! What a thought.

On a lighter note, I haven’t spoken to my wife for 3 weeks. We haven’t fallen out, I’m just not quick enough to interrupt.

LISTEN people… all you liberal douches need to get off your high horses.

Religious fanatics need to get their freak on too. and women arent THAT sexually needy… apparently the divorce rate is very easily linked to us men needing to conquer new uncharted territories every so often.

So what do the women do in their downtime between seeing their husband and sharing him with the other three wives? Well…. Watch the Koran channel…. watch some more Koran channel… more Koran channel…. “whew this is getting dull… I wonder whats going on outsi… WOW my gardener has a really cute butt!!”

Wow! The MP in question seems like a classic example of ‘open your mouth and display your foolishness’ type.

And the lone female spinster MP – towards whom this may have also been subtly aimed at – who, by remaining silent, becomes a classic example of “close your mouth and display your wisdom’ type.

CS Lewis said : “Some politicians hold that the only way to make a revolutionary safe is to give him a seat in Parliament”. Now, is the revolutionary safe? or the parliament safe? 😎

  32. can we talk

Some politicians hold that the only way to make a revolutionary safe is to give him a seat in Parliament

that might work if he was the only one, problem is he’s not. he’s competing for first prize with at least one other contender.. and then there’s a couple more hot on their trails..

Perhaps…but when I called him to ask him about it, he didn’t say he was joking. He just didn’t want to comment on it…and if you couple that with the fact that he himself has four wives and some 13 children, then you can’t really blame people for taking the comments seriously, can you?

  34. can we talk

    he himself has four wives

you wouldn’t think he’d be able to find half that many willing wouldya?!!

Thank you Tariq. For throwing light on the wider background in which this statement was uttered. But then, as you rightly said, one can’t blame ppl like us to misinterpret, given the context. 😎
